Sassoleone between Castle Traces and the Sillaro Landscape

Sassoleone lies on the right bank of the Sillaro at 443 metres above sea level. The landscape around Sassoleone is characterised by Calanchi and lush greenery. Historical Traces in the Village

The historic settlement of Sassoleone included an old castle. The first church in the centre of Sassoleone Castle is mentioned in 1151. The free-standing stone Campanile with its rectangular layout is the truncated old bell tower of the castle. The bell tower of the church in Sassoleone was formerly the keep of the fortification. Some buildings on Piazza del Leone preserve traces of Sassoleone’s historical past. Mercato District and Zuccherini

The historic Mercato district of Sassoleone formerly hosted weekly markets and monthly fairs. Another local tradition is associated with the Zuccherini of the Sagra: Around twenty Pro Loco volunteers prepare them according to an old ritual that connects several generations of Sassoleone’s residents. For the Sagra della Cuccagna on Sunday, 10 May 2026, the rapid climbing of a 16-metre-long, slippery pole was also announced. At the Sagra della Cuccagna, 3.5 quintals of Zuccherini were thrown from the windows and balconies of the houses on the Piazza.

Hikes through the Valley and Hills

Several activities announced for 2022 linked Sassoleone with the landscape along the Sillaro. One announced hike from Sassoleone led to the chestnut groves on the edge of the Sillaro Valley. On a hike from Sassoleone announced for Saturday, 11 June 2022, the route led through the wild Sillaro Valley uphill to San Mamante. Another evening hike from Sassoleone announced for 2022 led to the well-known Piramidine and included dinner at sunset.
