Monteveglio between Castle, Abbey and Park
Monteveglio combines a complex history with paths through a varied park landscape. The origins of Monteveglio Castle date back approximately to the year 1000. In 1092, Monteveglio withstood the siege by Henry IV and defeated his army. Those interested in medieval architecture will find a preserved arched gateway and a massive tower at the castle, both with swallowtail crenellations.

The Abbey of Santa Maria Assunta also visibly brings together several historical periods. Its church was built in 1092 in Romanesque forms, while the bell tower dates from the 15th century. The crypt of Monteveglio Abbey preserves pre-Romanesque capitals from before the year 1000. The church’s Romanesque forms and the crypt’s pre-Romanesque capitals thus represent two different historical reference points within the same abbey. The Oratory of Saints Rocco and Sebastiano is another part of the site’s historical succession: it was built during the plague epidemic of 1631 and restored at the end of the 19th century.
Hiking and Cycling in the Regional Park
The Abbazia di Monteveglio Regional Park covers approximately 1,000 hectares. Vineyards, orchards and steep slopes characterize its landscape, giving your stay a distinctly rural character alongside the historic buildings. The park has six thematic Sentieri-Natura hiking trails. This allows you to combine culture and landscape across different stages without having to limit your trip to a single experience. The approximate time indication makes this section easy to plan as a short stage, while the park area’s thematic organization highlights different focal points.
One specific example is the “Sentiero Natura – Salita al castello e all’Abbazia” hiking trail. It is 1.1 km long and takes approximately 40 minutes from the car park on Viale dei Martiri. For cyclists, the Ciclovia di Monteveglio follows a cycle path around Monteveglio and then climbs towards the abbey. These different routes help you plan your days according to your own interests and preferred pace of activity.
