Church and Local History

The Chiesa dei Santi Donnino e Sebastiano stands slightly elevated in the heart of the Borgonuovo hamlet. A short section of Via Moglio connects the church complex with Via Porrettana. In the 14th century, the church of Moglio, then dedicated solely to Saint Donnino, was under the Pieve di Pontecchio. The former church of Moglio, now Borgonuovo, was completely destroyed by an Anglo-American air raid on 16 April 1945.

The present-day building of the Chiesa dei Santi Donnino e Sebastiano was constructed between 1979 and 1981 and dedicated to Saints Donnino and Sebastiano on 11 October 1986. The building has a square-plan hall and a large, full-height polychrome window in the façade.

The settlement itself also reflects various phases of development: Borgonuovo’s first cluster of houses arose along the road now called Via Borgonuovo. After the First World War, houses began to be built on land previously used for agriculture. Paper production at a paper mill associated with Borgonuovo can be traced back to 1873.

Transport and Accommodation Options

The motorway, railway and state road are considered the three important transport routes that pass through Borgonuovo. A scheduled regional train runs from Borgonuovo to Pianoro. The train allows bicycles on board and has a carriage with a wheelchair space and an accessible toilet. The Ciclopedonale di Borgonuovo cycling and walking path extends for approximately 1 kilometre through green spaces. The FIPSAS SAPABA lakes are located in Borgonuovo di Sasso Marconi; valid F.I.P.S.A.S. membership is required for fishing at the SAPABA facility.

From the Borgonuovo stop, the route follows Via Porrettana back for approximately 300 metres to a roundabout. From there, the footpath on the bridge of the SS64 Var leads across the motorway to the Laghetti del Maglio. At the Laghetti del Maglio, the route joins the course of Via della Lana e della Seta again. This route leads hikers to the Borgonuovo bus stop.

In the area around Borgonuovo, the Via della Lana e della Seta route leads to Palazzo de’ Rossi, a Renaissance complex with a village, a mill, a sawmill and a paper mill, all powered by the water of the Reno. Also in the area around Borgonuovo, the Fira di Sdaz takes place between the Borgo di Colle Ameno and Parco del Chiù. It revives a farming ritual that has existed for more than 300 years.
