Pianoro: Hiking Trails, Rock Landscapes and History

Pianoro combines nature and cultural experiences in a landscape shaped by hiking trails, rock formations, historic sites and museums. The town is one of the municipalities in the Natura 2000 site IT4050012 Contrafforte Pliocenico; in addition, the Gessi e Calanchi dell'Abbadessa Regional Park extends to Pianoro, while the surrounding area belongs to the Parco dei Gessi Bolognesi e Calanchi dell'Abbadessa. This creates a destination where landscape and history can be experienced together.

Hiking and geology around Pianoro

The Via del Fantini is a long-distance hiking trail more than 50 kilometres long. It follows the Zena Valley and passes through nature parks and old villages. Another special feature is the first geotactile educational trail, which meets at the Museo dei Botroidi on Via Tazzola in Pianoro. The museum is designed as a space for vivid, tactile geology, where visitors can come into direct contact with the earth.

The Contrafforte Pliocenico is an approximately 15-kilometre-long, narrow rocky ridge that crosses the valleys of the Setta, Savena, Zena and Idice rivers. It includes various rock, woodland and grassland habitats. Less accessible areas preserve rare flora and fauna. For those interested in nature, the appeal therefore lies in the different landscapes and habitats of this elongated rocky area.

The geological diversity also includes the Buca di Gaibola, a large sinkhole with several swallow holes leading to numerous caves. The largest cave, Grotta Novella, serves as an underground laboratory and is adorned with impressive calcite formations. The Intorno a Monte Rosso circular trail also combines landscape and exercise: it begins in Livergnano at an altitude of 525 metres and offers impressive close-up views of the sandstone walls above Sadurano.

Livergnano between Village History and Panoramic Views

Livergnano is an old village documented since 1209. Its characteristic houses lean against the rock, are partly integrated into it and are brightly coloured. From the church square, the view extends across a large part of the Bolognese hills. Together with the starting point of the circular trail, this creates a distinct focus if you want to combine historic village scenery, panoramic views and a specific hiking route.

Museums and Regional Culture

The Museo di Arti e Mestieri Pietro Lazzarini collects material evidence of the former farming and crafts culture in the valleys of the Savena, Idice and Setta rivers. It offers educational programmes for children and adults and conveys the region's cultural identities. The museum therefore appeals not only to those interested in cultural history, but also to families who want to discover regional ways of life in an engaging way.

Pianoro's more recent history is also part of its character. From October 1944 to April 1945, the area was part of the Gothic Line, referred to by the Allies as the Winter Line. In Livergnano, the WinterLine Museum is built into a cave used as an air-raid shelter and preserves objects and artefacts from the wartime period.

Historic Sites at Monte delle Formiche and in Pianoro Vecchio

The parish church of S. Maria di Zena is associated with the celebration at Monte delle Formiche and was already mentioned in a document from the 10th century. Near Monte delle Formiche stands Zena Castle, a medieval structure with building elements from the 14th and 17th centuries. The Torre dell'Eredi is located next to the castle. The tower dates from the 14th century and served as a watchtower for controlling the area.

In Pianoro Vecchio, San Giacomo Maggiore was renovated in the 18th century. The church was associated with a pilgrims' hospice documented since the 12th century. The altarpiece is attributed to the Scuola del Francia. Also in Pianoro Vecchio, the Lùpari Tower was later incorporated into a 15th-century building with a double loggia.
