Cento: Art, History and Carnival

If you would like to combine Italian art, history and vibrant festival culture, Cento offers a range of different ways to do so. The city brings together the Civica Pinacoteca di Cento, the Rocca di Cento, the Carnevale di Cento and the Giardino del Gigante. There is also a Guercino walking route through the historic old town.

Art and History in Cento

The Civica Pinacoteca di Cento preserves paintings and works by Guercino and other great artists from various periods. The exhibition spans centuries of Italian art, giving your visit a broad cultural perspective.

A key historical site is the Rocca di Cento. It was built in 1378 as an imposing defensive structure at the request of Bernardo di Bonnevalle, Bishop of Bologna. Today, its interior spaces have been fully restored. They include the fireplace room, the chapel, the hall with the three-window opening, the gun loops and the prisons.

Carnival between Craftsmanship and Monumental Scale

The Carnevale di Cento takes place on five consecutive Sundays. Its most striking feature is its allegorical floats, which reach heights of up to 20 metres as enormous papier-mâché structures. They are made through the painstaking and skilled handiwork of master craftsmen from Cento’s five carnival associations. Unusual Art in a Landscape Garden

The Giardino del Gigante is an environmental artwork inspired by a fairy tale. The fairy tale was written by a girl from Cento. The garden includes colourful walk-through sculptures made of ceramic mosaic, designed as elements for play, relaxation and social interaction within a landscape garden. This means that the site appeals to different interests than a museum or parade and expands the cultural visit with an open, designed landscape.

Guercino in the Old Town and Basilica

Cento has a Guercino walking route through the historic old town. Those interested in the artist can also find Guercino’s painting "San Carlo Borromeo in preghiera" in the Basilica Collegiata di San Biagio. It dates from 1613 or 1614 and is located in the fourth chapel of the right aisle. In 1971, it was transferred here from the Church of Santa Maria Addolorata dei Servi. In Cento, therefore, both the art collection and individual works, as well as a walking route connected with Guercino, stand out.

The Pinacoteca Civica "Il Guercino" museum is located in the vicinity of Cento. For orientation between several locations, bus route 550 is also relevant: it connects Ferrara, Mirabello and Cento. This connection complements the cultural themes with a specific regional transport link.
