Francolino on the Po
Francolino extends along Via dei Calzolai, immediately beside the River Po Grande. Its location on the great river is complemented by the embankments of the Po Grande and the “Destra Po” cycle route: Together, they form a connecting element for Francolino as well as a distinctive landscape, natural, ecological and identity-shaping feature. The Parco Agricolo Bassani is also part of the area’s character; it stretches from the historic centre to the southern boundary of the Francolino frazione.

History and architectural heritage
The history of the village goes back a long way: Records about Francolino date back to the 10th century. Its location on the river is also connected with its former economic importance. Francolino was an important river port for the salt trade and was the scene of fighting between the Venetians and the people of Ferrara. For visitors interested in culture, this creates a historical theme connecting the river area, trade and political conflicts.
A specific place of remembrance is the Monumento ai Caduti di Francolino. It was inaugurated on 5 November 1922 and commemorates those who died in the First World War. After the Second World War, the commemoration was extended to include the victims and missing persons of that conflict. The Chiesulin of Francolino adds a historical and religious dimension: It is a 17th-century oratory and is now dedicated to Saint Anthony the Great, Sant'Antonio Abate.
The architectural heritage also includes the Chiesa di San Marco Evangelista in Francolino, which was designed in the Baroque style. Villa Costabili is generally identified with the former Delizia Estense of Francolino. In Francolino, you can therefore encounter both sacred architecture and a historical connection with the former Delizia Estense.
