Portomaggiore Between Architecture and Memory
Portomaggiore brings together precisely dated buildings, a long local history, the annual Antica Fiera and distinctive landscapes in its surroundings. The earliest documented records of Portomaggiore’s origins date from 896 and were confirmed by an enfeoffment dated 17 September 955. This gives you several clearly distinguishable ways to explore a place where architecture, festival culture, archaeology and watery landscapes stand side by side.
Architecture with Clear Dates
The Chiesa Collegiata Santa Maria Assunta was built in the 1950s and 1960s to a design by architect Giuseppe Vaccaro. The Teatro Concordia, by contrast, takes you back to the 19th century: Giovanni Tosi designed the theatre, which was inaugurated on 15 October 1844. If you choose buildings according to their period of origin and architectural context, these provide two distinctly different historical reference points.
The Chiesa della B.V. Madonna dell'Olmo adds another sequence of dates and a distinctive shape to this perspective. It was inaugurated on 5 May 1666 and consecrated as a Marian shrine in 1966; it also has an oval shape. The oval shape thus provides an architectural accent alongside the two consecration years.
Antica Fiera: Festival Culture with a Long History
The Antica Fiera di Portomaggiore takes place every year in the town centre and brings together agriculture, food and wine, entertainment and music. It includes a large amusement park, artistic and musical performances, numerous food areas, craft markets and demonstrations of soil cultivation. The first reliable documentation of the Antica Fiera di Portomaggiore dates from 1424. Este Estate and Roman Traces
The Delizia Estense del Verginese is the only surviving Este estate in the municipality of Portomaggiore. At the Delizia, La vinaia del sapere is used for temporary exhibitions. The Museo Archeologico – Sepolcreto dei Fadieni at the Delizia Estense del Verginese preserves artefacts from a Roman necropolis dating from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Here, a surviving Este estate, changing exhibition themes and tangible evidence of the Roman period come together without conflating the different historical layers.
Wetlands in the Surrounding Area
The Anse Vallive di Porto – Bacino di Bando lies in the surroundings of Portomaggiore. It is a wetland covering more than 52 hectares in the ancient Valli del Mezzano. It comprises one central and three smaller water basins. The Oasi di Porto Trava covers 11 hectares, seven of which are water, with several basins, including the Smaltara basin. The islets are connected by wooden bridges. This gives you a nature experience with different scales and forms: an extensive wetland on the one hand, and an oasis shaped by basins and wooden bridges on the other.
