Fiumalbo lies in the upper Modena Apennines in the Parco del Frignano, near the confluence of the Rio Acquicciola and Rio delle Pozze, from which the Scoltenna originates. Its historic center preserves a typically medieval urban structure with lanes, small squares, and inclines. Here, you can combine finding your way around the town with trails through a distinctive mountain landscape and with traditions that remain part of Fiumalbo’s character to this day.

Historic Center and San Bartolomeo
At the heart of the historic townscape stands the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Bartolomeo Apostolo. It is Fiumalbo’s most important church and, at the same time, the urban focal point of its historic center. Together with the lanes, small squares, and inclines, it shapes a walk through the town. Those interested in architecture, organically developed town structures, and Italian religious buildings will find a clearly recognizable focus of their stay here.
Old Trails through the Park
From Fiumalbo, numerous trails for excursions and walks lead into the park area along old mule tracks and former paths used by shepherds and pilgrims. They pass through beech forests, fir forests, and green pastures, reaching springs and blueberry patches. During walks around Fiumalbo, wooded and open areas of the landscape can be incorporated into your own plans. On hiking trails starting from Fiumalbo, you will also pass old hay barns with thatched roofs, known as “capanne celtiche.” These Capanne Celtiche, with their characteristic stepped roofs, are located in the hamlet of Valdare, about 6 km from Fiumalbo. The approximately 6 km indicates a rough distance between Fiumalbo and Valdare for spatial planning purposes.
Loop Trail with Sentiero CAI 489
A loop trail begins in Fiumalbo at the small square in front of the pharmacy; its first section follows Sentiero CAI 489. The square in front of the pharmacy serves as the starting point for finding your way around the loop trail. Before reaching the Muraglioni, you can descend along this loop trail to the Cascata Salto dell'Acqua.
Winter Activities and Fishing
In winter, Fiumalbo offers opportunities for ski mountaineering and snowshoeing. In addition, Fiumalbo has designated areas for catch-and-release fishing.
Traditions and a Specialty from the Historic Center
In Fiumalbo, a solemn procession in honor of the patron saint San Bartolomeo takes place, with the entire town illuminated by open flames. The biennial and distinctive “Presepe Vivente” recreates old professions whose memory is in danger of fading. Another local specialty is Croccante, a sweet typical of Fiumalbo. It is offered exclusively in the pastry shops of the historic center. Thus, religious traditions, the memory of former professions, and a specialty clearly associated with the center are among the defining themes of the town.
