Churches, Art and Medieval Traces
The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta is the oldest church in Castelfranco Emilia. Its first structure was probably built together with the castle between 1226 and 1228. The church also houses a painting of the Assumption of the Virgin commissioned from Guido Reni in 1625.
The Chiesa di San Giacomo preserves an organ made by Domenico Traeri in 1743 and restored in 1987. Its remarkable acoustics also make the church suitable for musical concerts. The Museo Civico Archeologico „Anton Celeste Simonini“ presents its collection in the Palazzo Piella in chronological order and organised according to territorial contexts. Near Porta Bologna, remains of medieval walls form part of the fortification ring of Borgo Franco. Forte Urbano is currently not open to the public and should therefore not be planned as a regular indoor visit.
Tortellino and Regional Production
The culinary identity of Castelfranco Emilia is reflected in the Fontana del tortellino. It represents the town’s culinary tradition, whose symbol is tortellino. The Sagra del Tortellino is a fixed date in the annual calendar: it takes place every year on the second Sunday in September in Castelfranco Emilia.
At the Acetaia Comunale, must from grapes grown in the area is fermented and turned into vinegar using traditional methods in accordance with the DOP specification.
Park and Nature Trails
The Parco di Villa Sorra is a significant example of a 19th-century Este romantic park. Its classification as a historic park adds a landscape-oriented dimension to the picture of Castelfranco Emilia.
The Oasi faunistica di Manzolino includes the 1,350-metre-long Percorso delle acque trail. Thus, alongside the arcades in the town centre, there is also a specifically named path in the surroundings of a wildlife oasis. The trail can be regarded as a distinct focus for nature and walking interests, without losing sight of the town’s cultural attractions.
