Querciagrossa among hiking trails, history and Frignano cuisine

Querciagrossa combines challenging hiking experiences with a history closely linked to old routes, travellers and regional cuisine. It is also home to a park in the hamlet and a geological unit in the wider area of Pavullo nel Frignano.

Hiking trails with different characteristics

The CAI 520 Trail is a hiking route associated with Querciagrossa. The route is challenging and intended for experienced hikers. Good physical preparation is required. Anyone including this trail in their plans should take their hiking experience and fitness into account accordingly.

Another connection is provided by Hiking Trail 518. It runs from Pavullo via Cà di Chino, Montecuccolo, Renno, Albareto and Querciagrossa, and back to Pavullo. A 174 KB GPX track for CAI 518 is available for download. For personal preparation, Trail 518 can be planned and followed digitally based on its route and sequence of places.

Querciagrossa along historic routes

Querciagrossa developed on the borders between Montorso and Montecuccolo along the old ducal road leading to Montecenere. From there, the road branched off towards Tuscany or Liguria.

In 1696, Marchesa Vittoria Spinola Grillo, who had come from Genoa, was received in Querciagrossa by a delegation of distinguished citizens from Pavullo. The occasion was the inauguration of the Oratorio di Mediana, which she had financed. In 1751, the Locanda in Querciagrossa, which had already existed for some time, served as a base of operations for engineer Francesco Portocarrero during the construction of the section of the Via Vandelli between Pavullo and Montecenere.

The historic Trattoria di Querciagrossa was also part of this travel culture. It was a stopping place for travellers and included a stable where the stagecoach changed horses. The Osteria di Quercia Grossa can be traced back to the early years of the 18th century.

Frignano cuisine and local continuity

Vecchia Trattoria di Romani offers traditional cuisine from Frignano. The menu includes mushrooms, truffles, cheese, cured meats, meat and homemade pasta. Since 2006, Gabriele Romani and his wife Luisa Ferroni have run the trattoria; today, they run it together with their children Enrico and Chiara.

For those interested in geology, the wider area of Pavullo nel Frignano contains a geological unit known as “membro di Querciagrossa”. It is characterised by dark-grey marly pelites alternating with medium- and coarse-grained sandstone layers.

Orientation in the hamlet

The Querciagrossa hamlet is home to Parco Via Giotto, located on Via Giotto.
