Albareto: Porcini Mushrooms, Forests and Trails

The Riserva Naturale Regionale e Oasi WWF dei Ghirardi nature reserve extends across a significant part of the Albareto area. The forests around the town are suitable for walks and hikes as well as mountain-bike excursions. From Albareto, nature excursions lead, among other places, along the Torrente Gotra. Another destination is Monte Gottero, at an elevation of 1,640 meters. The town also lies along a section of the Ippovia della Val Taro e Val Ceno. The circular “Sentiero rosso” trail, also known as “Giganti verdi,” is 3.56 kilometers long and passes monumental downy oaks. With this length, the circular trail remains manageable as a short hiking stage.

Porcini Mushrooms and Regional Cuisine

Albareto lies in the central part of the Fungo di Borgotaro PGI area. Abundant porcini mushrooms grow in the forests around the town, while chestnuts and trout are among the local gastronomic specialties of the Albareto area. The Fiera Nazionale del Fungo Porcino di Albareto takes place every year in September; this recurring annual period is decisive for visiting the festival. The Fiera brings together events, sports, nature and gastronomic tradition. Its location along the Strada del Fungo Porcino is also part of Albareto’s regional connection with mushrooms. The mushroom therefore represents both the forest landscape and the area’s cuisine, festival tradition and regional trails.

Culture in the Town

The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta in Albareto houses a carved and gilded 17th-century altar made of alder wood. The Museo di Guerra can be visited in Albareto Town Hall; it is connected with the town’s wartime history. The Museo del Fungo Porcino also has an exhibition site in the Palazzo della Comunalia in Albareto. The museum explores the connection between mushrooms, forest and cuisine in a dedicated cultural setting. For culture enthusiasts, the specific themes therefore range from sacred furnishings and wartime history to the region’s mushroom heritage.

Getting There and the Scenic Road

Albareto can be reached by car via the A15 Parma–La Spezia motorway and the Borgotaro exit. After leaving the motorway, continue via Borgo Val di Taro to Albareto. For rail travel, the most convenient station is Borgo Val di Taro on the Parma–La Spezia line. A winding scenic road leads from Albareto to Passo di Cento Croci, which marks the boundary between Emilia and Liguria. The pass therefore connects the journey from Albareto with a crossing between two regions.
