Botteghino near Parma: Archaeology and Cycling Tour

Archaeological traces in the plain south of Parma

The Botteghino archaeological site is located in the elevated plain south of Parma. It dates to the period between the second half and the end of the 5th millennium BC. For understanding the site, not only its location but also the great chronological depth of the settlement traces documented there is decisive.

The remains of a rectangular hut were excavated at the Botteghino archaeological site. The structural evidence is supplemented by various groups of finds: two copper awls and a fragment of a ceramic crucible with clearly visible traces of melting were found there. The site also included a deep water well.

The materials used and the ceramics have also been documented individually. Honey-colored flint was frequently used for the stone tools at the Botteghino site, while the fine ceramics include bowls. Those interested in early settlement history will therefore find several specific points of reference in Botteghino rather than just a single find.

Ghiaie di Botteghino and early settlement traces

There was a necropolis at Ghiaie di Botteghino, that is, a burial site connected to a small settlement. The Ghiaie di Botteghino necropolis was located directly along a route. Thus, in addition to the Botteghino site, another named place with archaeological traces has been documented. The connection between the necropolis and the small settlement is explicitly part of the recorded evidence; no more precise present-day route can be inferred from it.

Cycling tour and planned cycling connection

The route known as “Parma–Botteghino” is a 14.7 km cycling tour near Parma. The kilometre figure refers to this cycling tour and not to a single section of the cycling infrastructure plan. The cycling infrastructure plan also includes a section of Via Traversetolo from Tangenziale Sud to Botteghino. The cycling tour and the planned section should therefore be understood as two separate pieces of information: one refers to a 14.7 km route, while the other refers to a planned part of the cycling infrastructure.

Orientation between stops and the park

The “Botteghino area artigianale” stop is located on Strada Traversetolo near Strada Da Mareto, on the western side. The “Botteghino Casa Schiavi” stop is also located on Strada Traversetolo, but near Casa Schiavi. The two stop names thus refer to different landmarks along the same named road: one to Strada Da Mareto and the other to Casa Schiavi.

Parco Botteghino is located on Via Guido Orsi. Thus, in addition to Strada Traversetolo, another specific street is associated with Botteghino for local orientation. A green area at Strada Traversetolo 147 in Botteghino was included in the green maintenance work scheduled for 9 to 14 March 2026.
