Castello di Torrechiara and its distinctive rooms
Castello di Torrechiara is one of the significant examples of fortified architecture in Emilia-Romagna and throughout Italy. The Camera d’oro is a bridal chamber whose name refers to the former covering of the wall panels with gold leaf. This room contains frescoes from 1460 to 1462 depicting scenes of courtly love.
Castello di Torrechiara has been used several times as a filming location, including for the film “Ladyhawke”. The underground rooms in the bastions of Castello di Torrechiara can now be visited following restoration work completed in 2006. This gives visitors different ways to experience the architecture, interiors and its use as a film location.
Badia di Santa Maria della Neve
Badia di Santa Maria della Neve is a Renaissance Benedictine abbey in Torrechiara, built a short distance from Castello di Torrechiara. Construction began in 1471 at the behest of Count Pier Maria II de’ Rossi. Badia Benedettina also includes Le cantine della Badia, 15th-century vaulted cellars restored with the aim of returning them to their original condition.
Sentiero d’Arte and Outdoor Paths
The Sentiero d’Arte is a freely accessible footpath reached from the area below Castello di Torrechiara. It runs along the Canale San Michele through vineyards and tomato-growing areas to the gates of Langhirano.
A cycle and pedestrian path used by tourists connects the routes coming from Torrechiara with the Museo del Prosciutto. For trip planning, Torrechiara therefore offers historic buildings, a footpath and a connection for cyclists and pedestrians side by side.
Practical Information and Regional Specialties
The Torrechiara IAT office provides tourists with special mobility needs with a free electric scooter for visiting Castello di Torrechiara. Pick-up is possible exclusively during IAT opening hours. The office also provides information and services relating to Castello di Torrechiara and the surrounding area.
La Bottega del Borgo offers tastings of typical products from the hills of the province of Parma. The products can be enjoyed on site or while strolling through the charming streets of Borgo di Torrechiara. This makes it possible to combine a visit to the buildings with a culinary stop in the village.
