Memorial sites and art in Alfonsine

The Museo della battaglia del Senio opened on 10 April 1981. For the municipality of Alfonsine and the towns along the Senio River, it is a memorial site commemorating the events of the Second World War.

The Casa Museo Vincenzo Monti is located in the house in Alfonsine where Vincenzo Monti was born. Manuscripts, letters, portraits and memorabilia are preserved there.

The Church of Santa Maria has stained-glass windows in the apse. It also houses a painting of the Baptism of Jesus by Anacleto Margotti. Santa Maria is open during services.

Nature reserve and guided trails

The Riserva Naturale Speciale di Alfonsine is a nature reserve covering around 13 hectares and is divided into three stations.

The reserve is home to a population of the European pond turtle, Emys orbicularis, which is protected at European level and has become the symbol of the reserve.

The Museo Casa Monti offers guided excursions on foot or by bicycle. They lead through the surrounding area and to the stations of the Riserva Naturale Speciale di Alfonsine. The guided excursions and Nel Senio della Memoria can be undertaken on foot or by bicycle.

Trails, summer and local traditions

The historic liberation walk Nel Senio della Memoria takes place on 25 April and follows the Senio River for 18 kilometres between Cotignola and Alfonsine. The route can be covered on foot or by bicycle and connects the two towns via a historic riverside trail. At 18 kilometres, the complete route between Cotignola and Alfonsine is a key factor in planning the day, regardless of whether it is undertaken on foot or by bicycle. 25 April is therefore the fixed date for this historic route between Cotignola and Alfonsine.

The Labirinto Effimero, created every summer at the Galassi farm, covers more than 50,000 square metres. Its design, paths and branches change from year to year. A summer visit should therefore be expected to involve a changing layout.

The traditional Sagra delle Alfonsine is also known as Festa degli Spaventapasseri and involves visitors in local traditions.

Railway station and Museo della battaglia del Senio

The Museo della battaglia del Senio can be reached from Alfonsine railway station, which is located on the Ferrara–Ravenna railway line, in about ten minutes on foot. The approximately ten-minute walk can therefore be planned as a separate part of the train journey to the museum.
