Bagnacavallo between Arcades, Art and Natural History
Accommodation in Bagnacavallo
Bagnacavallo is particularly interesting if you would like to combine historic urban structures, art and local culture. The historic centre preserves an original medieval layout with a winding pattern and long arcaded streets. Piazza Nuova complements this townscape as an oval marketplace lined with arcades. It was built in 1758 and is considered the first centre of its kind in Romagna equipped for trade.
Squares, Routes and Historical Orientation
Piazza Nuova is located a few dozen metres from Piazza della Libertà. It is not accessible to bicycles, motorcycles or cars; parking is available at Largo Kennedy and in the surrounding streets. At the same time, Piazza Nuova is accessible to people with disabilities. For finding your way around locally, both the square’s distinctive layout and the different access options are therefore relevant.
Romanesque Church and Cultural Heritage
An important sacred site is the Antica Pieve di San Pietro in Sylvis. The Romanesque church dates back to the 7th century and is one of the best-preserved Pieve churches in the Ravenna area. Its apse preserves frescoes from around 1320, attributed to the master Pietro da Rimini. The site may have corresponded to a harbour on the Via dei Romei, used by pilgrims travelling to Rome around the year 1000.
The Teatro Carlo Goldoni also combines architectural history and cultural artefacts. The theatre was built between 1839 and 1845 and inaugurated on 27 September 1845 under the name Teatro Nuovo. Today, six violins, a viola and a cello are permanently exhibited there. These instruments received awards at the national violin-making exhibition in Bagnacavallo between the 1960s and the 1990s.
Art, Monastic Spaces and Regional Tradition
The Museo Civico delle Cappuccine comprises a department of old art with works from the 15th to the 18th century, as well as a department of modern art featuring paintings by around fifty Italian artists. The Convento di San Francesco offers a different perspective on history. It dates back to the 13th century, was remodelled several times and partly rebuilt in the 18th century. Its historic rooms, including the Sala delle Capriate and the new dining hall, also known as the Sala Oriani, now host cultural events.
In Villanova di Bagnacavallo, the Ecomuseo delle Erbe Palustri displays artefacts and tools for processing and weaving marsh plants, as well as native wood. In the outdoor area of the Ecomuseo, the Etnoparco “Villanova delle capanne” reconstructs the classic Romagna huts made from marsh reeds. The Sagra delle Erbe Palustri, an event held in Villanova di Bagnacavallo in September, is another part of the area’s local character.
Natural History and Local Cuisine
The Centro Visite Podere Pantaleone includes the “Pietro Bubani” natural history department, covering botany, geology, palaeontology and local fauna. It also has a room for environmental education, as well as information about visits and tourism and cultural events at the site. During winter and the bird migration season, Podere Pantaleone provides refuge for many bird species, including nightingales, hoopoes, magpies, scops owls, owls and barn owls.
Bursôn represents the connection between the landscape and regional flavour: this red wine made from an old indigenous grape variety is part of Bagnacavallo’s local culinary tradition. The districts are connected by waterways as well as combined cycling and walking routes through the countryside. This gives both culture-focused travellers and visitors interested in nature, regional cuisine and slow travel concrete themes to consider when planning their trip.
