Rocca and medieval traces
Along the perimeter of the ancient castle of Castel Bolognese, you can see long sections of wall and three surviving defensive towers.
The remains of the Rocca also display a characteristic polylobate shape. It was created during the rebuilding in the 16th century and gives the surviving parts of the castle complex a clearly recognisable architectural feature. The former Ospedale di Santa Maria della Misericordia was already built in 1396 and adds to the site's historical points of reference.
Festivals and historic cultural sites
The Sagra di Pentecoste takes place annually in Castel Bolognese. Its origins go back to a vow made to the Madonna della Concezione in 1631. The event thus combines a festival tradition that continues to this day with the vow of 1631.
The Mulino Scodellino is a 14th-century building. It is municipally owned and protected by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and the Soprintendenza di Ravenna. Numerous educational guided tours for schools and other groups take place at the Mulino Scodellino.
Other cultural destinations include the Antiquarium Comunale in the vicinity of Castel Bolognese. The Palazzo delle Esposizioni is a museum in the surrounding area. The Palazzo Attergati Rossi - Bandini, a palace, is also located nearby. Together, these sites extend the historical perspective beyond the surviving fortress remains and the Mulino Scodellino.
Excursions along the Canale dei Mulini
A 40-kilometre route through the Ravenna plain begins at the Canale dei Mulini. It is suitable for excursions on foot and by bicycle.
Another date for sports-oriented visitors is the 50 km di Romagna. This is an Italian ultramarathon held annually on 25 April and organised by Podistica AVIS di Castelbolognese. For arriving by train, Castel Bolognese has an important railway junction. From there, Ravenna and Bologna can be reached in around 40 minutes.
Castel Bolognese therefore brings together historic architectural forms, museums, an annually recurring festival tradition, a long route across the plain and an important railway connection in a single travel experience.
