Culture, Faith and Remembrance
Albinea reveals itself through specific places and stories ranging from medieval documents to symbols of more recent European remembrance. The Pieve di Albinea is mentioned in a document issued by Otto II and dated October 14, 980, in Bruchsal. The Santuario di Montericco, the parish church of Beata Vergine Immacolata di Lourdes, was begun in 1896 and was the first church in Italy dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. A section of the Berlin Wall has stood in front of Albinea’s primary schools since 1999. The partner municipality of Treptow-Köpenick donated it as a sign of friendship, as well as a reminder against wars and in favor of peace among peoples.

Archaeology and Sacred Art
The Tana della Mussina is considered one of the most significant monuments of the Copper Age, dating to the 3rd millennium BC. This period was characterized by the first use of the metal copper. Santa Maria dell’Oliveto contains noteworthy furnishings and 17th-century paintings, including an impressive fresco of the Assumption in the apse basin. Recently discovered 16th-century frescoes on the theme of charity have also been uncovered in the small portico leading to the monastery complex.
Protected Landscape and Karst
The Ca’ del Vento, Ca’ del Lupo, Gessi di Borzano area is designated as Special Area of Conservation IT4030017 under Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC and lies within the municipalities of Albinea and Viano. Connected to the Tana della Mussina is a karst system that has so far been explored over a total length of more than 1,900 meters.
Hiking and Cycling
The Sentiero partigiano della Liberazione crosses the Albinea area. The Anello di Ca’ del Vento loop is suitable for hiking and cycling; it also begins and ends in the Borzano district. If you enjoy dividing your days between landscape and culture, you can include these trail themes in your plans together with the churches, the Tana della Mussina or the karst system connected to it.
Water Engineering with a Long History
The Canale di Albinea was built around 1188 by the Bishop of Reggio. It diverted water from the Torrente Crostolo over 10 km to irrigate the canons’ lands and power several mills.
Vinegar, Wine and Local Dishes
Albinea can also be discovered through regional flavors. At the Acetaia comunale in Villa Tarabini, free guided tours are offered, accompanied by experienced vinegar masters; registration is via a form. At the edition of the Sagra dei Lambruschi e della Spergola that celebrated its 60th anniversary, guided tastings of Lambrusco wines and white wines made from the Spergola grape variety were offered together with local dishes.
