Church, Oratory and Community History
Massenzatico combines religious architectural history and social local history. The parish church of San Donnino Martire was founded in the 9th century and rebuilt in 1600. The Oratory of Sant’Antonio da Padova in Boccalino was built in 1663. Visitors interested in culture will find the parish church, community facilities and the town’s Fiera in Massenzatico.

Massenzatico’s social history includes two early community institutions. One of the first consumer cooperatives was established in Massenzatico in 1886; the first Casa del Popolo was established there in 1893. The traditional Fiera di Massenzatico recreates the town’s historic agricultural fair and brings local farming traditions and culture back to life.
Agricultural Surroundings and Casa Sgabo
Ninety-six percent of Massenzatico’s area is agricultural in character. Vineyards and some orchards are characteristic features. These two landscape elements give land use a concrete form. Casa Sgabo serves as a place of hospitality and of caring for the spirit and the landscape, with particular attention to biodiversity.
Cycling Connections and Bus Route 12
Cycling connections run along the main traffic axis throughout the entire length of Massenzatico’s built-up area and connect the town via Gavassa with Reggio Emilia. For cycling exploration, the route can be followed from the built-up area via Gavassa to Reggio Emilia. The main traffic axis forms the section within the town, while Gavassa serves as the connection point to Reggio Emilia. The connection is therefore not limited to a single point but covers the entire length of the built-up area.
Massenzatico is also served by urban bus route 12, which runs at low frequency between Roncocesi, Caserma Zucchi and Pratofontana. The low service frequency should be taken into account when planning a journey. A fixed time frame is therefore advisable for trips on this route. The low frequency is less reliable for spontaneous travel between locations than for a journey planned within a predetermined time window. Roncocesi, Caserma Zucchi and Pratofontana form the geographical sequence of the connection.
The Turn-Off to Rifugio Sgabo
In Massenzatico, a turn-off leads to Rifugio Sgabo. The turn-off is 7.8 kilometers long and leads to the refuge in Massenzatico. It initially follows the bank of the Canale dei Ronchi and then that of the Cavo Bondeno. It then continues along Caminati and Bigi streets to Rifugio Sgabo. For planning the route to Rifugio Sgabo, the 7.8 kilometers form a separate section between the waterside stretches and the subsequent Caminati and Bigi streets in the local area. The route therefore changes from the banks of the two waterways to Caminati and Bigi streets. Planning this section requires consideration of both its length of 7.8 kilometers and the sequence of its prominent intermediate points.
