Castelleale is one of the best-preserved fortified Malatesta estates in the Rimini area. At the same time, it is a small rural settlement with a medieval layout and significant Gothic architectural remains.

The Fortified Complex of Castelleale

At the beginning of the 15th century, the settlement of Castelleale was arranged around a square courtyard. At the same time, it was fortified by a high, battlemented wall, a massive tower, and a surrounding moat. The square courtyard forms the settlement’s internal point of reference, while the wall, tower, and moat make up its outer fortifications. In Castelleale, these structural elements form part of the spatial arrangement around the courtyard. From an architectural perspective, both the enclosed courtyard structure and the individual defensive buildings are therefore central.

Gates with Different Forms

The gates also display different architectural forms. Castelleale’s carriage gate had a pointed arch, while the smaller pedestrian gate had a trefoil arch. The pointed arch tapers to a point at the top, while the trefoil arch is divided into three arch forms.

Parish Church Incorporated into the Fortifications

The parish church of Castelleale is built onto the fortification walls. It was constructed toward the end of the 16th century and restored at the beginning of the 17th century. Its construction and restoration therefore belong to a later building phase than the fortifications from the early 15th century. Architecturally, however, the church remains connected to the fortification walls. The religious building thus stands directly beside the settlement’s defensive structures.

Architectural Remains on the Outside

On the outside of Castelleale, walls and arches from the 14th century can be seen. There are also old windows with stone surrounds. Castelleale continues to preserve its 15th-century gates, which were recently restored by the municipal administration. The window surrounds provide a distinct stone detail alongside the walls and arches. The recently restored gates stand beside the architectural remains from the 14th century. This creates a variety of historic structural elements within the same settlement when viewing its exterior.

Residence of Bishop Leale Malatesta

Castelleale is home to the residence of Bishop Leale Malatesta, who commissioned its construction there. A 15th-century dedication plaque made of Istrian stone is still visible on the residence. Its position on the residence connects this material detail with the building commissioned by Bishop Leale Malatesta. Alongside the fortification architecture, this also highlights a specific connection with the history of the Malatesta family.

Geographical Setting in the Landscape

From Croce di Montecolombo, a side road leads through the valley of the Rio di Mordano and across the Ponte Scaricalasino to Castelleale. The route therefore passes through a rural landscape before reaching the settlement.
