Scavolino on Monte Carpegna

Scavolino lies on the northern slopes of Monte Carpegna. The name itself points to its mountain location: it derives from “scabulum”, the term for the step of Monte Carpegna on which the original settlement stood. Historical Traces in the Village

The history of Scavolino can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Its first mention appears in a document of Otto I dated to 962; many consider this document a forgery. A will of Count Girardo di Bertinoro dated to 1062 lists Scavolino among the castles left to his son.

The castle ruins of Scavolino are also part of the village’s history. They cannot be visited and were once a residence of the Carpegna family. This historical context is particularly important for your visit: the ruins represent the former history of the village, not an accessible building today.

Church, Main Square and Remembrance

The former collegiate church of Scavolino is today’s parish church of Santa Mustiola. It contains a stone baptismal font from 1427. The loggiato on the main square is also one of Scavolino’s most important sights. On La Croce, a small hill in Scavolino, there is a monument to those who fell in the First World War.

Festivals on Set Dates

Religious and community traditions also shape Scavolino. The feast of Saint Mustiola, a virgin and martyr, is celebrated on the first Sunday in July. The Festa della Comunità takes place on the first Sunday in August. The “Festa grossa” is associated with the third Sunday in September. These three dates give the local calendar different cultural focuses, without any longer event period being specified.

Hiking Trails on Monte Carpegna

For days in the mountain landscape, CAI Trail No. 102 leads from Scavolino to Passo del Trabocchino. The trail crosses the summit meadows as well as the summits of Monte Carpegna and Monte Carpegna Est. The Scavolino–Passo del Trabocchetto–Passo dei Ladri–Scavolino circular hike has 510 metres of elevation gain, a difficulty rating of EE and a stated duration of 4 hours and 15 minutes; its route uses CAI Trails 102 and 106.

The Rifugio Fontanelle is also located in the mountain area at an altitude of 1,350 metres. The hut is modest and simple and is owned by the Comunanza Agraria di Scavolino.
