Friuli-Venezia Giulia between the Dolomites, lagoons and fortified towns

Friuli-Venezia Giulia combines expansive natural landscapes, distinctive historic sites and a cuisine shaped by several cultural influences. The Friulian Dolomites Nature Park, Aquileia, Cividale del Friuli, Palmanova and the Valle Cavanata Nature Reserve offer very different ways to experience the region. When planning your trip, the key question is therefore whether you want to focus on mountains, observing nature, archaeology, fortress architecture or cycling routes.

Mountain landscape in the Friulian Dolomites Nature Park

The Friulian Dolomites Nature Park covers 36,950 hectares and is the larger of the two nature parks in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. It offers nature walks and trekking on a suitable network of trails with numerous support facilities such as mountain huts, accommodation and bivouacs. Those who enjoy exploring on foot while on holiday will find a clear focus here on trails through the mountain landscape.

Birdwatching at Valle Cavanata

The Valle Cavanata Nature Reserve offers a different focus. Among salt meadows, wet forests and beaches, there are opportunities for birdwatching; numerous bird species use the area for resting and breeding. Designated walking and cycling paths allow visitors to observe birds in their natural habitat. From Grado, the reserve can be reached via attractive cycling routes.

Ancient history and ecclesiastical history in Aquileia

Aquileia is the place to experience ancient history and ecclesiastical history. Most of the remains of the ancient city are intact and unexcavated; Aquileia is therefore considered the most complete example of an early Roman city in the Mediterranean region. The patriarchal basilica complex played a decisive role in the spread of Christianity to Central Europe in the early Middle Ages.

Palmanova and fortress architecture

Palmanova was built in 1593 by the Republic of Venice and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th Centuries: Stato da Terra – Western Stato da Mar” since 2017. Its regular nine-pointed star-shaped layout is complemented by three rings of fortifications dating from the 16th, 17th and 19th centuries. In the Bastion Park, one path leads into the moat and past a waterfall with a picnic area, while another follows the upper rampart walk; both meet again at the Contromina Tunnel. The underground defence system can be visited during the designated opening hours.

Lombard traces and underground spaces

Cividale del Friuli preserves significant evidence of its Lombard past. The Celtic Hypogeum consists of underground cavities carved into the rock: three low corridors branch off from a central room. Its original function remains unknown. Access is exclusively via the guided tour service organised by the Municipality of Cividale and the Regional College of Cave Guides and Cave Masters of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The Grotta Gigante can likewise only be accessed as part of a guided tour; the route extends over 850 metres and reaches a depth of 100 metres.

Friuli-Venezia Giulia by bike

Cyclists can view the Alpe-Adria Cycle Route as a connection stretching for more than 400 kilometres from Salzburg to Grado. The Italian section begins in Tarvisio and partly follows disused railway lines. Through Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the route runs from north to south: along the Fella and Tagliamento rivers, over moraine hills and through the Friulian plain to the lagoon and the Adriatic.

Regional cuisine shaped by several traditions

The region also displays various influences in its cuisine. In the areas around Trieste and Gorizia, the cuisine reflects Habsburg and Slavic traditions; in Carnia, the culture of shepherds; and in Friuli, rural culture. Regional signature dishes include frico, made with potatoes and cheese, and jota, a soup made with potatoes, beans and white cabbage.
