The border between Gorizia and Nova Gorica runs through Stazione della Transalpina. If you would like to experience this cross-border connection at a specific location, the station site is one of the city’s notable features. To help you find your way around Gorizia, the urban transport network comprises seven daytime lines, one night line, and a cross-border connection to Nova Gorica in Slovenia. All lines operate via the intermodal passenger centre at the railway station.

Fortress, museums and layers of history

Castello di Gorizia still retains the appearance of a fortress. The castle also houses the distributed exhibition Theatrum Instrumentorum. This brings together in one place the preserved form of a fortress and an exhibition whose individual parts are spread throughout Castello di Gorizia.

The Museo della Grande Guerra presents photographs, weapons, medals and other evidence of life in the trenches of Gorizia during the First World War. The museum also includes a life-size reconstructed trench system that visitors can walk through. The Museo della Moda e delle Arti Applicate displays a collection of garments and accessories from the 18th to the 20th century. The Collezione Archeologica comprises finds from Gorizia and nearby areas dating from the late Paleolithic through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

The Sinagoga Ebraica was built in 1756 and stands at the centre of the former Jewish ghetto. The area around Gorizia also includes Palazzo Cobenzl, a palace, Palazzo Attems Petzenstein, a palace, Castello di Gorizia, a castle, and Palazzo Arcivescovile, a palace. These places complement the museums and the Castello with further tangible evidence of the city’s and the region’s history.

Palazzo Coronini Cronberg and the parks

The museum tour of Fondazione Palazzo Coronini Cronberg leads through fifteen rooms. It includes the room where Charles X of Bourbon, the last king of France, died in 1836. Villa Coronini Cronberg, its outbuildings and its park can be visited.

Parco di villa Coronini Cronberg was created towards the end of the 19th century as part of an urban improvement programme intended to establish Gorizia as a garden city. In Parco della Rimembranza di Gorizia, several shaded paths lead to the memorial monuments.

The area around Gorizia is also home to notable elevations: Karlhöhe is a summit, Trstelj is a mountain, Jelenk is a mountain, and Veliki Rob is a summit.

Nature trails, memorial sites and urban transport

Parco di Piuma Isonzo has an educational nature trail. Parco urbano del Castello offers a convenient unpaved path, a large sunny recreational area, and several benches and tables.

At each station on the Map of Memories there is an information totem that briefly describes the context and provides access to multimedia content via a QR code. For routes to the city’s important sights, line 1 is the most important line in Gorizia’s urban transport network. It runs every 12 to 15 minutes, providing clear guidance for using the city’s public transport.

Culinary character

Gorizia’s culinary tradition reflects the coexistence of the Latin, Germanic and Slavic cultural spheres that developed over centuries. Together with the museums, parks, historic buildings and border locations, this creates a cityscape in which cultural history, nature and regional diversity can be experienced side by side.
