Ghirano reveals its character where the Meduna and Livenza rivers converge. In the Ghirano-Tremeacque area, two bridges located close to each other cross the two rivers. If you would like to combine landscapes with local history, this is a starting point with clear geographical and historical reference points.

Discover the River Landscape on Foot

A walk to the confluence begins at the car park in Ghirano’s square, returns there and takes about three hours, with no changes in elevation. The route follows a cycle and walking path proposed as part of a tourism-related rural development programme, running along the embankment crests of the two rivers. Along the way, it offers views of the lowered floodplain areas. This provides you with a clear overview of the specific starting and finishing point, the approximate duration and the route of the walk for planning purposes.

The areas along the Livenza near Ghirano are known as Pra degli Angeli. When the Meduna River floods, these areas are inundated, as they were in the past. The river landscape is therefore not merely a backdrop, but is closely connected to the local surroundings through water levels and floodplains.

Architecture and Historical Traces

The freestanding campanile of the Church of San Pietro e San Paolo Apostoli in Ghirano was built between 1947 and 1951. The square brick tower has a Roman clock face and four round-arched bifores. Gerolamo Savoldo’s painting “Annunciazione” was also found in the parish church of Ghirano di Prata. The painting had reached Ghirano from Venice as a result of the Napoleonic suppression of religious buildings.

The Floridi family built Palazzo Floridi in Ghirano in the 17th century. The three-storey manor house included a large park, barchesse and farm buildings. A historic connecting road called the “stradon” linked the Floridi villa with Passo di Tremeacque; this connection can be traced back to a document from 1719.

The medieval lords of Prata also shaped Ghirano’s history. They built a castle there to control the river, and its location has since been identified. Ghirano Castle disappeared completely as a result of the war of 1419. Later, its site was used for a time as a quarry supplying the kilns of Rivarotta.

In Prata di Pordenone, the Church of San Pietro e San Paolo houses a De Lorenzi organ built in 1873, with mechanical action and 25 pipes. The present parish church of San Pietro e San Paolo in Prata di Pordenone was built to a design by Antonio Maggion between 1797 and 1846 and consecrated on 11 June 1846.

Autumn Festival with Baccalà

The Sagra del Baccalà is part of the local food and festival culture. It takes place in autumn, between the last weekend of September and the first two weekends of October, and attracts visitors from a wider surrounding area. The festival includes food and dancing. The event thus complements the river and history themes with a seasonal occasion centred on the local community and regional everyday culture.
