Poffabro lies at the foot of Monte Raut, on the left side of the Colvera. Its exposed sandstone surfaces, arches and arcades, wooden balconies and paved paths give the village a distinctive appearance. Here, you encounter ways of life and traditions that have largely disappeared. For a trip to Italy focused on architecture, regional history and peaceful village landscapes, Poffabro therefore offers many specific points of interest.

Architecture and Crafts in the Village

The Church of San Nicolò Vescovo contains a 17th-century gilded wooden altar dedicated to the Rosary. Another facet of the village’s history is presented at the Frisanco visitor center, which is located in Poffabro’s former cheese dairy. The original machines and tools used for cheese production in the 1930s have been preserved at the Poffabro visitor center. The visitor center therefore brings together two distinct areas of focus: the former production site and the nature of the protected area. The upper floor presents the geomorphology, vegetation, and animal and plant species of the protected area.

Craft and local themes can also be explored along the visitor route through Poffabro. At Via Villanova 14, there is a craft exhibition about the Scarpeti. Together with the stone architectural elements, arcades and wooden balconies, this creates a tour in which not only individual buildings but also different traces of village life become visible.

Rock Formations on the Sentiero dei Landris

The Sentiero dei Landris begins at the little church in Buffui, on the road from Poffabro to Forcella di Pala Barzana. Along the trail is the Landri Viert, a high rock vault with an arched edge. The Landri Scur consists of low, deep, horizontal cavities in a hollow bordered by a rock wall. Both formations reveal the geological features of the trail in different ways, without requiring you to rely on abstract technical terms.

Trails for Different Interests

If you approach Poffabro by bicycle, the R005 cycle route reaches the village. Cyclists can then leave their bicycles in the square and explore the narrow paved lanes on foot. The Frassati Trail also passes through Poffabro. The Poffabro information point provides information materials about the village and the Friulian Dolomites Nature Park. This gives cultural, nature and hiking interests their own distinct focal points in the village landscape and along the surrounding trails.

Poffabro on the Winter Nativity Scene Trail

The event »Poffabro, Presepe tra i Presepi« gives the village a distinctive seasonal character. From mid-December to mid-January, around one hundred nativity scenes are displayed in unusual locations around the historic center. This period offers a clear focus for travelers who want to get to know Poffabro not only through its architecture and landscape, but also through a winter tradition shaped by the local community.
