Villalta between Cultural Heritage and Cycling Routes

Villalta offers views of an area where cultural history, traditional landscapes and cycling routes come together. In the vicinity of Villalta, Villa Perotti was restored and converted into a cultural centre. The preserved Torre di Sbrojavacca, a square brick tower standing 20 metres high, is also located nearby. The tower was first mentioned in a document dating from 1220. This provides a historical perspective that extends from a striking landmark to the broader traces found throughout the municipal area.

Cultural history in the municipality of Chions

Villalta is part of the municipality of Chions. The orthogonal pattern of roads and fields associated with the Roman centuriation of the Agro di Julia Concordia has been preserved there. The parish churches of Chions also date from the 14th and 15th centuries. These churches contain valuable frescoes, most of which are attributed to the school of Bellunello. The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giorgio in the vicinity of Villalta dates from 1400 and complements this ecclesiastical history with a specifically dated building.

Cycling routes with different road surfaces

Several cycling connections are available for exploring the surrounding area. A loop route to historic villas and manor houses uses sections of asphalt, gravel and cobblestones. On the villa loop, asphalt, gravel and cobblestones determine the choice of riding style. Another loop route leads through Chions and Pravisdomini and partly follows the Ciclovia della Bassa Pianura Pordenonese, designated as FVG 9.

Another cycling route leads from Sesto al Reghena via Cordovado and Chions to Taiedo. It passes through an area rich in history and culture. Near Villalta, the Parco delle Fonti at Torrate also has 8 kilometres of cycling paths. This provides both connections between several places and routes within the park for planning an itinerary.

Park, lake and historic sites of remembrance

Near Villalta, the Parco delle Fonti at Torrate covers 80 hectares. At Lago le Roste, an artificial lake offers opportunities for sport fishing; the site also has a park and equipped facilities for recreational activities. The Rio Lin, by contrast, is primarily part of the area’s shared memory: historically, it was remembered as a natural open-air sports venue for young people from Villalta.

A landscape with recognisable historical traces

The agricultural character of the municipality of Chions, to which Villalta belongs, is also an important part of its development. It remained intact until the more recent past. Together with the straight-line pattern of roads and fields, the churches, frescoes and historic towers create a landscape in which cultural traces do not stand in isolation but are connected with routes and outdoor spaces.
