Trails Through Forest and Karst
The “Paleopasseggiando sul Tropico del Carso” nature trail offers an opportunity to discover nature, local traditions and the complex geological history of the Classical Karst. The route begins at the Centro Didattico Naturalistico di Basovizza, passes through the village and initially follows CAI Trail No. 44 along the Sentiero Josef Ressel in the Bosco Igouza before continuing uphill via CAI Trail No. 3 and the SPDT Vertikala to the summit of Monte Cocusso.
The Sentiero Ressel is a 5 km-long nature trail. Along this route, centuries-old pine forest, karst sinkholes and hidden caves alternate. One special feature is the infrared technology used to provide spoken information for blind people. In this way, the trail combines observation of the karst environment with an expressly described form of information delivery.
“Il sentiero delle rocce” offers another perspective. The approximately 7.5 km-long route begins at the Centro didattico naturalistico di Basovizza, passes through Rudist limestone towards Gropada and presents the most important geomorphological features as well as the agro-pastoral use of the landscape. The different route lengths of 5 km and approximately 7.5 km help you compare trails and topics according to your own plans for the day.
Bazzoni Forest and Grotta Nera
The Bazzoni regional forest has an information trail covering natural features of the surrounding area, including karst heathland, reforestation and wildlife. Excursions to the Particella Sperimentale del Bosco Bazzoni make it possible to compare karst-typical Austrian pine forests with typical karst scrub vegetation. The Grotta Nera is located in this forest area, serving as an underground educational space in the “Eliseo Osualdini” Centro didattico. From Basovizza, a signposted path leads to the Particella Sperimentale del Bosco Bazzoni in about 15 minutes.
Church and Documentation Centre
The history of the village can also be seen at specific sites. The present-day Santa Maria Maddalena church in Basovizza was consecrated on 5 November 1857. A documentation centre with information about the Foiba and the tragic history of that period is located beside the Sacrario di Basovizza. Guided tours of the Foiba di Basovizza and its documentation centre can be booked with expert accompaniment.
Specola M. Hack and Practical Information
The Specola M. Hack is located at the Stazione Osservativa di Basovizza of the INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico di Trieste. From Trieste railway station, you can reach the Stazione Osservativa by taking bus 39 towards VILLA CARSIA or bus 51 towards AREA DI RICERCA. Get off at the Basovizza, Via Gruden stop (Basovizza-Farmacia).
The Centro Didattico Naturalistico di Basovizza offers exhibitions and activities in Italian, English and Slovenian. For schools or groups of 15 or more, the centre is accessible only by prior appointment. This rule is particularly important if you are including a visit with a larger group in your travel plans.
