Grimacco Inferiore: Culture, Mountain Landscape and Trails
Grimacco Inferiore lies on the southeastern side of the ridge that separates the Cosizza Valley from the Rieca Valley. Grimacco is located in the upper Cosizza Valley, in the heart of the Julian Prealps. The ethnographic collection, churches, village architecture and trails through the mountain landscape offer different ways to experience the area. This is especially interesting if you would like to combine culture and outdoor activities in your plans.
Culture and Traditional Village Landscapes
The Museo etnografico Mario Ruttar is located in the hamlet of Clodig di Grimacco. It is a private ethnographic collection assembled by Mario Ruttar between 1950 and 1960. It is displayed in five domestic rooms, including a traditional wood-fired kitchen and a stone sink. The collection preserves household items, tools used in agriculture and crafts, and documents relating to emigration.
The built-up centre of Grimacco Inferiore generally preserves the form of the original settlement core. In Clodig di Grimacco, the “Funeral of Carnival” ritual is celebrated every year on Ash Wednesday. Topolò has rural houses arranged radially, and an international avant-garde festival is held there every year. The large, intricately woven masks of Grimacco are still used during the traditional carnival. In Brida, Plataz and Canalaz, stone-and-wood houses preserve traditional rural architecture.
Landscape and Regional Memory
The monumental chestnut tree in Canalaz is more than four centuries old. The Val Coderiana can be reached from Topolò; its trails are suitable for hikes and walks in a natural setting.
The Žefcjova family collection preserves documents and objects from life in the Valli del Natisone from 1600 to the present day. The Church of San Martino on the mountain of the same name dates back to the 14th century and is considered the oldest church in the Valli del Natisone. The Church of Santa Maria in Liessa has a façade mosaic depicting Saint Barbara, donated by emigrants.
Hiking and Mountain Biking
For active days, the Grimacco–Monte San Martino–Topolò mountain-bike route first passes through Grimacco Inferiore, then continues through Grimacco Superiore and on to Passo San Martino. It then follows a rough road to Monte San Martino and reaches the Chiesetta di San Martino; from there, the summit can be reached on foot. The route then continues to Bocchetta di Topolò and Topolò. The descent, characterised by stones and thorny vegetation, is considered challenging but is fully rideable for experienced cyclists.
The surrounding area can also be explored on foot: a hiking trail branches off from the road at Dolina and connects Grimacco Inferiore, Grimacco Superiore, Plataz and Canalaz. From Grimacco and Canalaz, trails cross the mountain into the municipality of Savogna. The trail takes about 15 minutes to reach the two Brida settlements. When choosing accommodation for your stay, you can consider whether the museum and churches, walking trails or the mountain-bike route should be the main focus.
