Gurrone Among Frescoes and Mountain Trails

Gurrone lies at 700 m above sea level and is considered a panoramic balcony overlooking the Valle Cannobina. The village combines this elevation with sacred art, older buildings and trails through the rural mountain landscape. The elevation of 700 m and the view over the Valle Cannobina provide a shared topographical framework for the trails and cultural landmarks.

Church, Frescoes and Chapel

The village is home to the church dedicated to Maria Assunta; its frescoes date from the 16th century. The Chiesa dell’Assunta also contains a Way of the Cross carved from pear wood. Enrico Mazzetta, who came from Gurrone, created this work in the early years of the 20th century. The Chiesa dell’Assunta also includes a former chapel dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie, dating from the 15th century. An old residential building in Gurrone is known for its characteristic frescoes. The old residential building adds another fresco theme in the village to the sacred landmarks. Maria Assunta and Madonna delle Grazie thus represent two different dedications within the sacred architectural history.

Trails to and from Gurrone

From Gurrone, it is recommended to follow the farm track to Alpe Olzeno. Several places of worship can be reached via footpaths on the Via Borromea; the trails provide an opportunity to discover the rural mountain landscape. Shortly beyond the farmsteads of Drignago, a broad mule track branches off towards Gurrone. The trail descriptions distinguish between a farm track, footpaths and a broad mule track. The three trails lead to Alpe Olzeno, to places of worship on the Via Borromea and to Gurrone from the direction of Drignago. Gurrone is therefore the starting point of the farm track to Alpe Olzeno and the destination of the mule track that branches off behind the farmsteads of Drignago.
