Cori between Festivals and Antiquity

Cori combines a long-established festival with ancient buildings, sacred art, paths through the surrounding area and oenogastronomic experiences. The Carosello Storico dei Rioni di Cori has taken place since 1937 in honour of Madonna del Soccorso and the patron saint Sant’Oliva. Cori therefore offers a cultural focus that is equally suited to curious explorers and to a trip with varied interests from day to day.

The Carosello includes a procession with flag bearers and representatives of the individual districts. Another component is the equestrian competition Corsa all’Anello: riders from the three districts attempt to pierce a 33 mm ring at a gallop with their dagger. The festival thus combines a historic celebration, district traditions and a precisely defined equestrian competition.

Art and Buildings from Different Eras

The Museo della Città e del Territorio di Cori is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Oratorio della Santissima Annunziata preserves frescoes depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The Oratorio della SS. Annunziata is also a national monument and is considered an important example of 15th-century painting.

The Temple of Hercules stands on Cori’s ancient acropolis, with almost perfectly preserved columns. It was built between 89 and 80 BC. In Cori’s ancient forum, the remains of the Temple of the Dioscuri include two Corinthian columns on a viewing terrace. Another striking glimpse into the town’s art history can be found in the cloister of a monastery in Cori: its upper portico has 27 different marble capitals and is considered a masterpiece of 15th-century sculpture.

Between Paths and Wineries

Cori lies along two stages of the Via Francigena del Sud. The route covers more than 50 km and leads through forests overlooking the plain, through settlements and along paths in the surrounding area. This route may be particularly appealing if you would like to combine cultural sightseeing with longer stretches on foot and changing landscape impressions.

The local food and wine culture is also part of Cori’s character. The Marco Carpineti, Cincinnato and Pietrapinta wineries offer sophisticated oenogastronomic experiences along the Strada del Vino, dell’olio e dei sapori, which runs through the area.
