Historic Traces in Prossedi

The present structure of Porta Maggiore was built in 1765 based on a design by the architect Domenico Schiera. Through this gate, you enter the medieval historic centre of Prossedi. This allows your visit to the town to begin with a specific building and the transition into the historic core.

The Romanesque Church of San Nicola in Prossedi dates from around 1200 and has a limestone portal from the 14th century. Inside is the painting “Maria Santissima Avvocata Nostra”, also known as “Madonna di Vicovaro”. The limestone portal therefore belongs to a later period than the Romanesque church.

La Loggetta is a medieval covered loggia that was formerly used as a market. Palazzo Baronale, also known as Palazzo Gabrielli, has four rectangular bastions and a courtyard with a fountain in the centre. Both buildings create distinct architectural accents within the town’s historic character.

Trails, Nature and Peaceful Exploration

A trail leads from Prossedi to the Prossedi Plateau for trekking. Prossedi is also located on the Via Francigena del Sud and the Cammino della Regina Camilla. The trail to the plateau complements the two routes with a separate trekking destination in the area around Prossedi.

Grotta degli Ausi lies a few kilometres from the Borgo Prossedi in the countryside. It is the destination of an easy hike and combines limestone formations of stalactites and stalagmites with a waterfall and a small lake. The waterfall and the small lake complement the rock formations with a visible waterscape. At the Sagra della Zazzicchia, salsiccia prossedana is sampled at the beginning of December. The event combines a local festival with a regional speciality and adds a seasonal accent alongside architecture, trails and nature.
