Campodimele: Medieval Streets, Trails and Local Traditions

Campodimele is located in the Monti Aurunci Regional Park, the Parco Regionale dei Monti Aurunci. Its historic center combines traces of medieval architecture with sweeping views, while local traditions give the town its own distinctive cultural character. This makes it a destination where you can combine history, outdoor activities and regional cuisine.

Streets, Walls and Views

Many streets in Campodimele’s historic center are spanned by medieval arches. They can only be explored on foot and offer panoramic views of Monte Faggeto, the Gulf of Gaeta and the more distant Monte Ruazzo. The path outside the walls is known as the Via dell’Amore and offers views of the valleys below, especially at sunset. The fortification wall still features clearly visible semicircular towers and is protected as a cultural heritage site.

Traces of Medieval History

At the Sant’Andrea di Campello archaeological site, an enclosing wall preserves the terraces of a medieval settlement. These structures were built between the 9th and 14th centuries AD. The site also contains the remains of a church built around 1300. The Monastero di Sant’Onofrio was founded in the 11th century at the request of Abbot Desiderio of Montecassino; its practical construction was overseen by Prior Gerardo di Pico.

Hiking and Cycling in the Monti Aurunci

Two trails begin in Campodimele. The CAI 905 starts at Canale del Tasso and leads to Monte Faggeto, passing by Rifugio Faggeto. The CAI 919b begins at Le Crocette. Two picnic areas are located along this hiking trail: Le Crocette and Valleltonda. There is also a clear option for cycling tours: the Monti Aurunci Bike Park comprises a 22 km circuit with 14 routes, including 11 single trails of varying difficulty. From Campodimele, the bike park can be reached via the road to the Convento di Sant’Onofrio and the plain of the same name. You can park your car there and follow the signs.

Traditional Specialties and Feast Day

The cultivation of Campodimele cicerchia has a long tradition. This legume is a traditional food in the area and remains an important source of protein. The feast day of Sant’Onofrio features green snails in sauce, known as “ciammotte ammuccate”; this specialty is considered a centuries-old tradition. The celebration of Sant’Onofrio takes place on June 12 in piazza Capocastello and piazza Municipio.
