Sermoneta: Castle, Old Town and Panoramic Views over the Pontine Plain

The medieval centre of Sermoneta is considered one of the best-preserved and most impressive in the entire area. The city’s completely preserved structure lies within the ring of walls. This creates a historic setting in which castle architecture, religious buildings, civic life and expansive landscapes offer different ways of exploring the town’s history. The ring of walls, buildings and viewpoints each create their own distinct focus.

Castello Caetani and Piazza D’Armi

Only the Maschio and the opposing tower known as the Maschietto remain of the Castello Caetani castle complex. Both rise above the square courtyard, the Piazza D’Armi. Castello Caetani is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with an admission ticket. The square courtyard forms the spatial centre between the surviving structures. This makes it possible to view the Maschio, Maschietto and courtyard together.

Abbazia di Valvisciolo and Expansive Views

The Abbazia di Valvisciolo creates a different architectural focus. Its complex includes the church, chapter house, refectory and cloister; the cloister forms the centre of the complex and is considered its most elegant part. From the forecourt, the view extends across the Pontine Plain to the sea.

The Belvedere of Sermoneta also directs the view outwards: from there, you can look across the Pontine Plain below, which stretches from the area around Monticchio to Latina and the Tyrrhenian Sea. On clear days, the Pontine Islands can be seen in the distance. On the mountainside between Valvisciolo and Sermoneta lie the polygonal walls of Monte Carbolino. They date from the 7th–6th century BC and are among the oldest in Lazio; the purpose of their construction remains unclear.

Town History and Public Life

The Loggia dei Mercanti is also part of the town’s history. It was built in 1446 on the orders of Onorato Caetani and served as the seat of the municipal administration, shops and public assemblies. This building therefore brings together administration, trade and public assembly as historic functions.

Music and Historical Reenactment

History is also brought to life through events in Sermoneta. The Festival pontino di musica da camera has been held in the stables for 60 years. To this day, a historical reenactment in period costumes takes place on the second Sunday in October.
