Montenero Sabino combines its historic center with sacred history, watercourses and local culinary traditions. The town is situated on a rocky spur bordered by two streams. Its historic center extends along the axis from Via Roma to the steps of Via Ducale. The town center features architecture shaped by the Middle Ages and numerous alleys named after flowers.

Architecture and History in the Town Center
Today's Castello Orsini displays various architectural layers from the 15th century and, above all, from the 16th and 17th centuries. A walk across the two watchtowers offers views over the valley and the town. The entrance on Via Ducale leads to the outdoor garden of Castello Orsini.
The Chiesa di San Cataldo also preserves several historical layers. It was fundamentally rebuilt in 1735; only the right side wall and some of the interiors on the left remain from the medieval building. Its features include stucco work, Baroque frescoes and a wooden Madonna statue from the 19th century, known locally as Madonna della MaternitĂ .
The Santuario di Vacuna is located in Montenero Sabino and is dedicated to Vacuna, a Sabine deity. Palazzo Bonacasata offers another way to explore the local history. A small museum room there houses finds from excavations in the sacred area of Dea Vacuna. Coins, ceramics and terracotta objects from this excavation area are on display.
Watercourses and Landscape
The waterways are among the distinctive landscape features around Montenero Sabino. The Rio Montenero is the largest tributary of the Farfa River. The Fosso della Mola is a small tributary of the Farfa and lies next to the old watermill. In addition to the historic center, the rocky spur, the Rio Montenero and the Fosso della Mola shape the landscape of Montenero Sabino.
Maccheroni and Oil from Montenero Sabino
The local character also includes the production of Maccheroni a fezze. The town's women make this pasta entirely by hand from flour, water, salt, eggs and oil. This culinary tradition is also at the heart of the Sagra dei Maccheroni a Fezze, which usually takes place on the third Saturday in July.
Another special feature is the oil from Montenero Sabino. It is still milled in water-powered oil mills with stone grinding mechanisms.
Getting to Montenero Sabino
The Strada Provinciale No. 46 Tancia runs through Montenero Sabino. It connects Rieti with Poggio Mirteto. From Strada Statale 4–Via Salaria, the town is easily accessible via the Montenero Sabino exit at the Ornaro junction.
