Townscape between the Castle, Corso and Piazza

Stimigliano reveals its history through the layout of its historic town. Castello Orsini occupies the northern end of the walled centre and controls its main entrance. This location connects the castle directly with the structure of the old town centre.

The historic centre of Stimigliano stretches along Corso Umberto I. Characteristic alleyways branch off it at right angles, forming a kind of Christmas tree-shaped layout. Piazza Roma offers a panorama with views of Monte Soratte. The Corso, the side streets and the view from Piazza Roma thus shape different aspects of the same townscape.

Palaces and Historical Layers

The historic centre contains palaces dating from the Baroque period. Palazzo Orsini was built on the remains of an ancient Roman villa. In addition to the town hall, one palace houses significant early Baroque frescoes. Stimigliano therefore brings together ancient Roman remains, Baroque architecture and early Baroque wall paintings within a closely defined local history.

The religious buildings also complement this cultural picture. They include the ancient Chiesa di San Valentino. The parish church of Santi Cosma e Damiano is located opposite Stimigliano’s old medieval town centre. The Cappella Giacomo Turrio Baldassarri contains wall frescoes and egg-tempera paintings executed on the walls. The various churches and chapels broaden the perspective on Stimigliano to include religious architecture and visual art.

Churches Outside the Centre and a Place of Remembrance

The Chiesa della Madonna del Nocchietto is located outside Stimigliano’s historic centre, along the road leading from Stimigliano towards the sanctuary of Vescovio. It was built at the end of the 16th century. Remnants of frescoes have been preserved in some areas of the walls. Its location, construction period and surviving paintings make it an independent part of the town’s history outside the central network of alleyways.

At the beginning of Corso Umberto I, directly behind the arch, a commemorative plaque for the poet Cosimo Renzetti marks a place of remembrance and inspiration.

Route Towards the Tiber Riverbanks

For cycling travellers, an MTB/gravel route called “Stimigliano–Anse del Tevere–Riserva naturale Tevere Farfa–Poggio Mirteto” is relevant. It is considered a route that begins at Stimigliano railway station and leads towards the Tiber riverbanks via the paved Via dell’Acqua. After the Enel dam, this route takes you into the Tevere Farfa nature reserve.

Another unusual feature is an aqueduct over 300 metres long. It was excavated entirely into Pleistocene calcareous sandstone, sand and conglomerate formations and currently supplies the fountain known as Fonte Cantaro.

Local Cuisine and Choosing Your Stay

In Stimigliano, you can sample various local specialities and typical dishes such as fettuccine al ragĂą. Together with the historic centre, churches, palaces, the panorama from Piazza Roma and the route described above, these create a multifaceted picture of the town. When choosing a hotel in Stimigliano, these specific themes can provide different focuses for planning your trip: culture and local history, a landscape connection towards the Tiber riverbanks or local cuisine. Above all, this means deciding which aspect of Stimigliano should be at the centre of your stay.
