One of Castagnola’s historic estates was largely wooded and was also known by the names Rio Torto and Fossa. The historic estates of Castagnola were crossed by the Numicus River. They lay in the Laurentine territory of the Rutuli between Lavinium and Ardea. The name Rio Torto thus connects the wooded estate with the marshland between which the approximate location of Aphrodisium and the boundary of the Castagnola estate lie. The historic location of the estates therefore follows an area between the two ancient points of reference, Lavinium and Ardea.

Aphrodisium and the historic inscription of Laurento

In the wider area around Castagnola, the approximate location of Aphrodisium is presumed to have been between the marshland of Rio Torto and the boundary of the Castagnola estate. An inscription is said to have existed in the house of Antonio de Canobio. It commemorates a freedman of Emperor Claudius. In Laurento, he served as imperial procurator responsible for the elephants.
