Rome between World Heritage and Antiquity

Rome’s historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980. Within this historical setting, you will encounter buildings and squares where different eras can be read directly in the cityscape.

Construction of the Colosseum began in 70 AD and was completed in 80 AD. The Roman Forum was the centre of public life in Rome for more than a millennium, taking you back to a time when political and social life was concentrated in this place.

On the Palatine Hill, remains of Iron Age settlements have been preserved; they are attributed to Rome’s oldest urban centre. The remains of several imperial palaces have also survived, including the Domus Tiberiana, the Domus Transitoria and the Domus Aurea. The Palatine thus connects early settlement traces with the monumental architecture of the imperial era.

Museums and Architecture in the City

The Pinacoteca Capitolina is the oldest public picture gallery. Most of the works in the Capitoline Museums come from Rome, combining a view of the city’s history with an art-historical perspective.

The Pantheon is one of the best-preserved examples of Roman monumental architecture. Castel Sant’Angelo combines a monument, an archaeological site and a museum. Both places represent different ways in which Rome’s architectural heritage is present in the city.

Squares and fountains also tell the story of Rome’s development. The Trevi Fountain is the representative terminus of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct. Piazza Navona preserves the shape and dimensions of the racetrack of the Stadium of Domitian. Fortifications and Historic Routes

The Museo delle Mura traces the history of Rome’s fortifications across three sections – Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Modern Era. The museum includes an original passage along the walls, which can be walked for a distance of approximately 400 metres to the arches of the Via Cristoforo Colombo.

A panoramic terrace between the large crenellated towers of the Museo delle Mura offers far-reaching views from the Via Appia Antica to the Castelli Romani. The view across the city thus complements the historical exploration of its walls and fortifications.

On the Via Appia Antica, you can walk or cycle among outstanding historical and archaeological remains. The Parco degli Acquedotti covers approximately 240 hectares between the Via Appia and the Via Tuscolana. The impressive surviving arches of the Claudio and Felice aqueducts stand there.

In the Parco degli Acquedotti, paths run along streams and waterfalls as well as through areas with trees and pastureland. The park therefore complements the densely built-up historic sites with open landscapes. Small boats can be rented at the Giardino del Lago in Villa Borghese.
