The Medieval Quarter is defined by narrow cobbled streets, stone houses and an ancient harbor. Toward the end of the 10th century, the quarter was built as a defensive stronghold against Saracen raids. In the quarter, the narrow streets and stone houses are thus intertwined with the history of the defensive stronghold.
Ramparts, Palaces and Churches
The Cavone is an old covered passageway along the walls of the Medieval Quarter and offers views of the harbor. The passageway runs along the walls and directs the view toward the harbor.
The Palazzo Doria-Pamphilj houses an important fresco cycle by Pier Francesco Mola. The Collegiata di S. Giovanni Battista ed Evangelista has medieval origins and was completely rebuilt between 1738 and 1748 based on a design by Carlo Marchionni. Forte Sangallo was built between 1501 and 1503 by Antonio da Sangallo, based on a design by Giuliano Giamberti. The Collegiata and the Forte thus represent different construction phases: the church was rebuilt in the 18th century, while the fortress was built as early as the beginning of the 16th century.
Military History and Religious Tradition
Conferences and art exhibitions are held at Forte Sangallo. The Museo dello Sbarco is also located there. It preserves war documents, uniforms, historical photographs, maps and military equipment found in Nettuno and Anzio. The fort therefore brings together the historic fortress, the exhibitions and the museum in one specific setting.
The Santuario Nostra Signora delle Grazie is an important Marian pilgrimage site and a destination for pilgrims. A festival is dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie in May. The festival date in May is part of the veneration of the Madonna delle Grazie.
Parks, Sea and Torre Astura
Parks and coastal landscapes also give Nettuno its distinctive character. Villa Borghese is set in a park covering around 40 hectares, with views of the sea.
The park of Villa Bell'Aspetto was declared a national monument in 1955. Mediterranean maquis, old trees and an octagonal tower are part of this park. The octagonal tower stands amid Mediterranean maquis and old trees.
Torre Astura stands on a picturesque island connected to the coast by an ancient bridge. At Torre Astura, the island, ancient bridge, river mouth and ruins meet on a stretch of coast with a wild beach. At the mouth of the Astura River, a few kilometers south of Nettuno, an ancient Roman harbor stood at Torre Astura; the ruins of a Roman harbor and an imperial palace have survived there. The Antiquarium preserves archaeological, historical and artistic finds from the Nettuno area. Torre Astura's wild beach can be reached from Foceverde via a path through a pine forest. The sea off Nettuno is considered suitable for water sports.
