Roccagiovine: Trails, Culture and Nature in the Monti Lucretili

Roccagiovine combines historic sites with trails through forests and narrow valleys. The entire area lies within the Parco Regionale Naturale dei Monti Lucretili, providing a clear setting for a trip where culture and nature belong together. Historic Sites and Squares

The Castello Baronale degli Orsini was built in the 14th century. It can only be viewed from the outside; the castle is easily accessible by car. The Chiesa di S. Nicola di Bari is a 17th-century church. Its furnishings include 17th-century frescoes and a painting from the Perugino school depicting the Madonna dei Ronci. The church is located on the ground floor, making it easily accessible to everyone.

The Chiesetta dei Flagellanti brings together various historical design elements: its walls are decorated with frescoes from the 14th and 17th centuries, and it also features slender arches of Gothic groin vaults. Piazza Vacuna offers a different focal point. It is laid out around a stone fountain and is associated with the presumed site of the temple of the goddess Vacuna. Today, the piazza is a meeting place for cyclists, hikers and tourists.

Forest Trails and Monte Follettoso

Several trails begin in the centre of Roccagiovine. They lead through forests and narrow valleys, passing spring fountains, the remains of hermitages and rural churches. This makes it possible to combine experiences in nature with individual historical traces, without having to experience the town solely through its buildings.

A circular trail ascending to Monte Follettoso leads through the Stretta Vallicina to the summit of Monte Follettoso and offers panoramic views.

Historical Traces between Roccagiovine and Licenza

Just outside Roccagiovine, the Villa di Orazio lies between Roccagiovine and Licenza. It preserves reticulated walls, baths and ornate mosaic floors. Also located between Licenza and Roccagiovine is the Ninfeo degli Orsini, which dates from the 15th century. Both sites extend the view of the history of this landscape beyond the immediate townscape.

Natural Setting and Best Time to Visit

The inner forests of the Roccagiovine area provide suitable habitat for the rare Martes martes. The combination of forest, valleys, springs and mountain trails particularly appeals to travellers who want to spend time outdoors while also visiting historic sites. A seasonal highlight is the Sagra della Castagna, celebrated in mid-October.
