Monte Soratte: History and landscape
In 1937, numerous tunnels were built into Monte Soratte at Benito Mussolini's instigation because of the mountain's proximity to the capital. They were intended to serve as air-raid shelters for senior officials of the Fascist government and the Royal Army. The underground complex thus refers to the political and military history associated with the mountain.
The limestone geology of Monte Soratte gives rise to above-ground and underground karst features in the Monte Soratte Nature Reserve. These include the Grotta di S. Lucia. The mountain is therefore both a historic setting and a natural area shaped by its geology.
Museum and regional nature
The Museo naturalistico del monte Soratte is housed in Palazzo Caccia-Canali in the historic centre of Sant'Oreste. It presents geological, anthropological, botanical and faunal content in order to provide insight into the Riserva Naturale del Monte Soratte.
The museum's programme includes temporary exhibitions, educational activities and lecture series. The themes are therefore addressed in different formats, from exhibition visits to educational and lecture-based presentations.
Bunker Soratte and mountain trails
The underground areas of Bunker Soratte can be visited as part of the Percorso della Memoria, thanks to the efforts of Bunker Soratte A.P.S. The tour leads into the part of Monte Soratte whose tunnels are connected with the history of the Fascist government and the Royal Army.
The Percorso Vita has a negligible difference in elevation, takes approximately 45 minutes and is very easy. Guided visits to Bunker Soratte take about two hours. For your daily planning, this means that a short trail section and a longer historical tour are available side by side as different programme items.
Sacred sites and festivals
The Eremo di San Silvestro hermitage on Monte Soratte preserves frescoes on the columns and along the central nave. The mountain's historical traces therefore also include a sacred site with preserved painted decoration.
The Festa della Madonna delle Grazie is traditionally also known as the Festa della Montagna. It includes a mass at the Sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie on Monte Soratte.
The Feast of St Anthony includes the blessing of the animals as well as a tasting of local meats, sweets and wines. Religious custom and regional products come together directly at this festival.
The San Silvestro monastery is located in the vicinity of Sant'Oreste. For annual planning, the festival dates differ considerably: the Festa della Madonna delle Grazie takes place two weeks after Easter, while the Feast of St Anthony is held on 17 January in the hamlet of Monte Pepe in Sant'Oreste.
