Modern Architecture
Villa La Saracena was designed by Luigi Moretti and built between 1955 and 1957. It has been protected as a historic monument since 2010. Those interested in architecture will encounter a work from the mid-20th century here, as well as a building with officially designated protected status. The villa was therefore created significantly later than the establishment of Castrum Novum and the construction of the Chiesa di Santa Marina, built in the 16th century.
Roman Traces and Early Church History
At Punta della Vipera, one of the most complete and interesting Roman fish-farming facilities along the Tyrrhenian coast has been preserved. Castrum Novum was a Roman maritime colony established in 264 BC. The Chiesa di Santa Marina is the oldest church in Santa Marinella and was built in the 16th century. The Castrum Novum Revivit program includes guided tours and educational demonstrations of Roman cuisine, with tastings of reconstructed dishes. This gives ancient history a culinary and vivid dimension. The history of the coast also includes a Norman tower from the 12th century that still stands today and served to protect the coast from pirate attacks.
Walks, Town Centre and Beach
The Sentiero del Boschetto is a designated walking trail in the Santa Marinella area. Santa Marinella’s town centre can be explored on foot along its picturesque streets. Important national championship competitions take place at Banzai Beach. Santa Marinella is therefore suited to days when you are looking for more than just a single experience.
Train Station and Nature Tours
Santa Marinella’s historic train station is 35 minutes from San Pietro station and is located not far from the beach. At the Macchiatonda Nature Reserve, free guided tours are offered on Saturdays and Sundays, with advance registration required. For your planning, this creates an alternation between exploring the town and attending a nature tour, participation in which must be arranged in advance.
