The landscape of the Monti della Tolfa

The Monti della Tolfa extend across approximately 17,000 hectares northwest of Rome, between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the river bend of the Mignone. Their landscape includes extensive grazing areas, Mediterranean scrub, and chestnut and beech forests. Wild orchids as well as rare and endangered birds of prey can be found in the landscape around Tolfa. Big Bench 291 offers a 360-degree view of the hills and the town of Tolfa with the Rocca.

History in buildings and the museum

The Palazzo Baronale, also known as Palazzo della Ragione, dates back to the 11th century. The Museo Civico di Tolfa is housed in the 16th-century convent of the Padri Agostiniani near the Santuario di S. Maria della Sughera. The tour of the Museo Civico di Tolfa covers the Etruscan, Roman, medieval and modern eras. Also on display are grave goods from the necropolises of Pian della Conserva and Riserva del Ferrone. The apse of the Chiesa di S. Egidio was part of Tolfa’s medieval city walls.

Guided routes and Tolfetan craftsmanship

Guided tours include a walk through the historic center of Tolfa and the ascent to the ruins of the Rocca dei Frangipane. They also include visits to leather workshops, where local artisans make traditional saddles and bags rooted in the Tolfetan tradition. One guided route includes the Etruscan-Roman temple of “Grasceta dei cavallari” and the ruins of the Abbazia di Piantangeli as two important stops. Big Bench 291 can be reached via a rainbow-striped path through the Macchiosi – Grasceta dei Cavallari area.

Festivals of horses, art and folk traditions

The Rassegna del Cavallo Tolfetano takes place in La Nocchia and is organized by the municipality, the Università Agraria and the Associazione Cavallo Tolfetano. The Torneo dei Butteri has been held in Tolfa in mid-August since 1968. La Radica takes place at the beginning of September as a festival of folk traditions featuring folk games, handicrafts, art and culture. At the beginning of August, Tolfarte brings an international festival of street art and artistic handicrafts to Tolfa.

From Rome, drivers can take the SS 1 Aurelia or the A12 to the S. Severa exit and then follow the provincial road to Tolfa for 23 km. Rail travelers can get off at Civitavecchia station and continue by Cotral bus on the Civitavecchia–Tolfa route.
