The work Christ Carrying the Cross in this church is attributed to Michelangelo. Bassano Romano’s religious traditions are particularly evident in today’s Macchina della Madonna della Pietà. It was built by an anonymous craftsman on May 17, 1874. On the feast Sunday, which always coincides with Ascension Day, the Macchina is carried through the town’s streets. Two rows of white-clad members of religious brotherhoods walk ahead, each holding a burning candle. Alongside its architecture, this established ceremony gives the town a distinctly visible religious character.
