Sutri between Tuff, History and Festivals

Ancient Traces in the Tuff

The Roman Amphitheatre of Sutri was carved into the tuff and was built between the end of the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. This allows the site to be experienced not only through its form, but also by following the route through its preserved structure.

The Archaeological Zone of Sutri covers 7 hectares of archaeological heritage. The remains are embedded in the tuff and surrounded by lush vegetation. Churches and Medieval Art

The medieval Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo was completed in 1207 and consecrated by Pope Innocent III. The Romanesque tuff bell tower, the Cosmatesque floor of the central nave, the crypt and parts of the façade have been preserved. The various architectural elements give the cathedral a particularly vivid historical character.

The church Madonna del Parto, known as the Mitreo, is entirely carved into the tuff and features preserved frescoes. Together with the cathedral, it shows how closely sacred architecture and local stone are connected in Sutri.

Museums with a Regional Focus

The Museo del Patrimonium displays numerous historical artefacts from Sutri and its surrounding area, including sculptures, inscriptions, frescoes and paintings. The museum in Palazzo Doebbing was established to house masterpieces of ancient and contemporary art. The two institutions have different focuses and complement a visit to the historic buildings with art and surviving historical evidence.

The Via Francigena and Special Reasons to Travel

The Via Francigena passes through Sutri. The ancient pilgrimage route led from Canterbury to Rome and is now a spiritual and cultural route. This also allows the town to be viewed from the perspective of a historic travel connection. The route complements the archaeological and sacred impressions with a form of travel in which landscape, culture and history are connected.

The events also give Sutri its own annual rhythm. The traditional Sagra del Fagiolo takes place between the end of August and the beginning of September and celebrates the famous “fagiolo della Regina” with typical dishes, music and convivial gatherings. During the Christmas season, the Presepe Vivente takes place in the rock necropolis of Sutri. It includes subdued lighting, atmospheric music, animals, depictions of traditional crafts and traditional costumes.
