Bolsena Between Archaeology, Lake Routes and Living Tradition

Excavations on the Poggio Moscini plateau uncovered the forum, the basilica, public buildings, and the remains of two domus, the Domus delle pitture and the Domus del Ninfeo. Bolsena’s historical perspective therefore ranges from tangible ancient architectural evidence to the later periods covered by the local museum.

History from Volcanology to the Renaissance

The Museo territoriale del Lago di Bolsena is housed in the reconstructed rooms of the Rocca Monaldeschi della Cervara. It covers the formation of the area, including volcanology, as well as human settlement from prehistory and early history through the Etruscan and Roman periods to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. For those interested in culture, Bolsena offers the excavations at Poggio Moscini, the Museo territoriale, and its religious tradition as distinct themes alongside one another.

Water Experiences and Different Route Lengths

At Lake Bolsena, water-related activities range from the Acquario to routes and boat tours. The Acquario di Bolsena has twenty exhibition aquariums and offers a tour through the freshwater world, leading from a river environment to a lake environment. Stage 39 of the Via Francigena begins in Bolsena and runs for 18 km to Montefiascone. The “Cammino del Miracolo” covers 21 km from the Basilica di Santa Cristina in Bolsena to Orvieto Cathedral. The cycling loop around Lake Bolsena is approximately 53 km long and also begins in Bolsena. When planning a day in Bolsena, individual connections to Montefiascone or Orvieto can be weighed against a complete cycling loop around Lake Bolsena. The complete loop therefore requires allocating a longer period of time in the day.

Santa Cristina, Summer Tradition and Local Cuisine

The Basilica di Santa Cristina has Romanesque origins and preserves the memory of the Eucharistic Miracle of 1263. I Misteri di Santa Cristina are also associated with this site: they take place every year on 23 and 24 July and use living tableaux featuring hundreds of participants in the historic center of Bolsena. For a different perspective on the lake, local providers offer boat tours on Lake Bolsena, some of which depart from the port of Bolsena. Bolsena is also located along the Strada dei Vini dell’Alta Tuscia. In culinary terms, the Coregone is known as the “king of the lake”; it is recommended, for example, alla mugnaia or grilled. With the Basilica di Santa Cristina, the Misteri, the port, the wine route, and the Coregone, Bolsena brings together religious tradition, the lake, and regional cuisine.
