Casarza Ligure among ancient trails and the Apennine landscape
Casarza Ligure combines traces of history with trails through wooded hills, open clearings and higher Apennine ridges. Around the town, the hills feature mixed forests and open clearings; on the higher Apennine ridges, there are open grasslands shaped by grazing over centuries. A dense network of trails leads through forests, ridgelines and scenic clearings. Terraced olive groves and vineyards remain part of Casarza Ligure’s local agricultural tradition.
Routes with history and geological features
The S. Lazzaro–Muntà di Povei–S. Rocco–Novano–Casarza Ligure route involves 2 hours and 30 minutes of walking and an elevation gain of 500 metres. The Muntà di Povei section includes a partially preserved, paved section of an ancient Roman road. Pillow basalts, formed by submarine lava eruptions, occur along the route.
Margherita di Fossa Lupara–Casarza Ligure passes by the prehistoric Lago di Bargone and Novano, a Benedictine settlement from the 12th century that was one of the area’s three oldest rectorates. At the end of this route, a visit to the “Parma Gemma” Museum can be booked.
Churches, frescoes and historic townscapes
The historic centre of Casarza Ligure has been preserved almost unchanged and features round arches, remnants of fortifications and stairways. The bell tower of the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista preserves traces of a watchtower from the 7th or 8th century. The same church displays a copy of the triptych created by Giovanni Barbagelata in 1499.
The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo was built in the Baroque style in the 17th century; construction ended in 1693. It contains a triptych by Giovanni da Barbagelata from 1498. The Chiesa di San Lorenzo di Verici has medieval origins, was rebuilt in the 16th century and extended in 1750. In the 1970s, a room from the former nave and a section of the old exterior wall with a fully preserved 14th-century fresco were discovered there.
Other historical traces include Casa Fracchia in Bargone: the 17th-century rural building has a garden, is recognised as a building of particular cultural interest and served the writer and literary critic Umberto Fracchia as a home and refuge. For travellers interested in culture, this creates a broad spectrum ranging from religious buildings and works of art to local history and literature.
Music, wine and regional agriculture
The Festival Bandistico di Casarza Ligure takes place every year in September and celebrates local wind-band music. In June, it is followed by Cardini Critical Wine, a fair for mindful wine consumption featuring tastings and meetings with producers. At Villa Sottanis, an auditorium hosts concerts and theatre performances for around 150 seated people. Mobility can also be linked to the cycle path that crosses Casarza Ligure as far as Francolano and then continues into the Sestri area, without having to use city traffic.
