Cogoleto between the Coast, Nature and Monte Beigua

Cogoleto brings together the coast, nature and Ligurian culture within a compact area offering a range of experiences. Between rocky coves, small beaches, historic paths and places steeped in local history, there are many ways to explore the town on foot, by the water or with a focus on culture. Coast, Sea and Geological Formations

The Lungomare Europa runs along the coast, connecting rocky coves with the geological and geomorphological features of the Beigua Geopark. Along the Cogoleto–Varazze itinerary, several paths and stairways provide access to the sea; small beaches lie between the cliffs. Cogoleto’s free and/or equipped beaches and bathing establishments are suitable, among other activities, for snorkelling. Some bathing establishments are accessible to people with disabilities.

A Path along a Former Railway Line

The Cogoleto–Varazze itinerary is 4.1 km long, runs on level asphalt and can be used all year round. It follows the restored trackbed of a former single-track railway line on which trains ran until 1970. Illuminated tunnels and rocky sections with Mediterranean maquis characterize the route; Aleppo pines dominate the vegetation. This makes it possible to combine a short walk with coastal scenery and railway history.

High-Level Trails and Hillside Districts

The trails in the higher districts are also part of Cogoleto’s character. The hillside districts of Sciarborasca and Lerca are starting points for reaching the characteristic Alta Via dei Monti Liguri. Stage no. 20 passes through the municipality of Cogoleto. The Tipica Casa Contadina Ligure is the starting point for a footpath leading to the summit of Monte Beigua at an altitude of 1,287 m.

Nature by the Sea

The Villa Beuca Botanical Garden covers 34,000 m² and contains Mediterranean and local plants, including endangered species. It is situated on a coastal terrace 100 m above sea level, overlooking the sea. Two ponds showcase examples of local natural wetlands; numerous waterbirds have settled there and formed nesting sites over the years. An educational trail with explanatory panels complements the garden.

Rural Life, Art and Remembrance

The Casa Contadina di Sciarborasca is housed in a restored original farmhouse that was inaugurated in 1998. Numerous objects document rural life and work there. The rooms of the Tipica Casa Contadina Ligure are arranged by theme: one kitchen displays equipment for processing milk, pasta and coffee; one bedroom features hand-embroidered linen; another room is dedicated to spinning and sewing; and the attic contains tools for outdoor work.

The Oratorio di San Lorenzo houses a painting of the martyrdom of the saint attributed to the painter Giovanni Battista Carlone (1603–1684), as well as several works by the painter Gino Grimaldi (1889–1941). Fornace Bianchi is part of the “Area di Archeologia Industriale Tiziano Mannoni”. On 10 August, the traditional “Processione dei Cristi” takes place in honour of Saint Lawrence, the patron saint of Cogoleto.
