Borgo D'Oneglia: Church, Lanes and Olive Groves

Borgo d’Oneglia lies on a hill opposite the district of Costa d’Oneglia and at the same time amid terraces and olive trees. The elevated location and green surroundings provide the landscape setting for the organically developed lanes and individual buildings of the village.

Organic Lanes and Two Districts

Borgo d’Oneglia is divided into two parts known as Borgo Grande and Borgo Piccolo. This division is relevant for finding your way around the village. Despite the 1887 earthquake, Borgo d’Oneglia has largely preserved the original layout of its lanes and main square. The historic structure is therefore shaped not only by individual buildings but also by the arrangement of the village space.

San Michele Arcangelo and Francesco Brea

The parish church of San Michele Arcangelo dates from the 18th century and was built in the Baroque style. The Canonica della Parrocchia di San Michele Arcangelo in Borgo d’Oneglia was declared a cultural asset of cultural interest pursuant to Article 10, paragraph 1, of Italian Legislative Decree No. 42/2004.

The Church of San Michele Arcangelo houses a recently restored polyptych by the painter Francesco Brea, who came from Nice. It depicts the Madonna and Child, Saint Peter, Saint John, the Annunciation and the Pietà. Visitors interested in culture will find two distinct historical periods here: the parish church dates from the 18th century, while the polyptych is dated 1551.

Washhouses as Part of the Villagescape

A washhouse dating from the early 1930s stands on Via Rosa. The building is well preserved and is still in use. The facility includes basins used alternately, as well as work surfaces covered with slate slabs.

A very old and locally rare washhouse stands in Piazza della Croce. There, a simple barrier with a sloping surface in the stream forms a natural basin like a dam. Its location along the stream is therefore an integral part of the structure’s architectural form.

The Palazzo del Conte Riccardi di Lantosca also stands at the entrance to Borgo d’Oneglia. In Borgo Piccolo, there is a very old washhouse with a basin and a well beside it. The basin is also used for irrigation.

The three washhouse locations on Via Rosa, in Piazza della Croce and in Borgo Piccolo complement the lanes and main square with further tangible features of the village.
