Camporosso combines art-historical discoveries with nature observation and its own culinary tradition. Those who explore the town attentively will encounter sacred art spanning several centuries, open landscapes along the Nervia and Barbagiuai, a typical dish from Camporosso. This creates different ways to experience a stay: you can admire architectural details, follow historical traces or discover the local cuisine.

Churches and Works of Art in Camporosso

The second chapel on the left in the Parrocchia di San Marco Evangelista contains the polyptych “Madonna and Child with Saints Giuliano and Bernardo” by Agostino da Casanova. The Polittico di San Marco is currently kept in the sacristy and was created by Stefano Adrechi in 1533. Both works give religious art in Camporosso particular significance, although they belong to different historical contexts.

The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo has a Proto-Romanesque foundation dating from the 11th century. During restoration work, fragments of frescoes from the second half of the 15th century were uncovered there. In the apse, the depiction shows Christ blessing within a mandorla, accompanied by the symbols of the four Evangelists; the twelve Apostles can be seen below. The foundation, fresco fragments and apse thus lead through several historical layers, without requiring you to focus on a single architectural detail.

The oratories also provide distinctive architectural accents. The Chiesa Oratorio dei Bianchi is a Baroque building with a triangular bell tower and 17th-century frescoes. The Oratorio del Suffragio is also Baroque. It features a double flight of steps with a curved marble balustrade and two fountains decorated with depictions of siren heads. The Palazzo Doria in Camporosso was the residence of the Doria marquises in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Open Landscapes and Birds along the Nervia

South of the historic centre lies the Parco attrezzato Bigauda. The park covers an approximately 20,000-square-metre open, level area that is directly accessible and visible from the provincial road. South of the theatre, a hill has a gentle slope and provides a privileged observation point with a 360-degree view. Bigauda therefore offers both an expansive level area and an elevated point from which to look out over the surroundings.

The Oasi del Nervia is located at the mouth of the Nervia River between Ventimiglia and Camporosso. It provides a habitat for more than 200 species of wild birds and is suitable for birdwatching. Its small size makes it possible to observe the birds from close range. This gives you a clear nature-focused experience that differs from the churches and historic buildings in the town.

Everyday History and Local Cuisine

In the historic centre of Camporosso stands a large millstone disc from the former Frantoio dello Sfrollo. In the first half of the 19th century, this frantoio was one of sixteen oil mills in Camporosso. Francesco Maria’s house is marked by a commemorative plaque. Together with the Palazzo Doria and the religious buildings, these landmarks reveal different facets of the town’s history.

The Barbagiuai are also part of the local identity. These are fried ravioli filled with pumpkin and seasoned with Formaggio brusso and aromatic herbs. This speciality anchors Camporosso not only in its architectural and church history, but also in a regionally distinctive food culture.
