Calvo in the Bevera Valley: Hiking, Landscape and History
Calvo combines the landscape of the Bevera Valley with trails on Monte Grammondo and traces of a long local history. The village is one of the districts of Ventimiglia along the Bevera Valley and lies on the left bank of the lower Bevera. This creates a destination where hiking, the regional landscape and historical context can be experienced together within a small area.
Hiking between the Bevera Valley and the border ridge
The first stage of the Franco-Italian tour “Un balcone sul Mediterraneo” over Mont Gramondo follows the border ridge and descends through several hamlets characterised by olive groves into the Bévèra Valley. In San Pancrazio, the route passes through the village, turns onto a track in Calvo that quickly becomes a path, and then runs parallel to the Bevera towards Torri.
The hike to Monte Grammondo also begins in Calvo: first, you cross the bridge over the Bevera, after which the route follows a paved road towards Serro Inferiore and Serro Superiore. After approximately 1.5 km, the route branches off at a hairpin bend onto the gravel track marked “via Grammondo”. For planning your walk, the change in surfaces is relevant: the route begins on asphalt, continues on gravel after approximately 1.5 km and ends with a marked path of about ten minutes. The surface therefore changes several times on the way to the summit.
A few metres after the hairpin bend, a short marked path leads in about 10 minutes to the Italian summit of Monte Grammondo at 1,379 m. At approximately 1,250 m, the route joins, from the right at a hairpin bend, a path coming from Olivetta San Michele.
Local History and San Pancrazio
The local history also includes the Chiesa San Pancrazio in Calvo, which has an organ. The name Calvo appears for the year 1618 in the form “Calvi” and for the year 1655 as “li Calvi”. Earlier settlements associated with Calvo were located on the lower slopes of Colla Rossa near the Vallone del Cornà . These historical references add a temporal dimension to today’s landscape without reducing the small village to a single attraction.
Directions and Location for Planning Your Trip
From Ventimiglia, follow the signs to Bevera, Calvo and Torri. Calvo is approximately 5 km from Ventimiglia. When choosing your hotel, you can therefore check whether Calvo itself fits into your travel plans and whether the trails to Monte Grammondo are to be the focus of your stay. The combination of a specific hiking destination, the valley landscape and historical references to the villages provides a clear basis for your individual planning.
