Historic Centre and History

Fanghetto is the last Italian village in the Roya Valley before the crossing into France. At its centre lies the spacious Piazza del Popolo. From there, the village branches out among its caruggi and rises uphill. This provides a clear point of reference for orientation: the square and ascending lanes shape the villagescape, while the historic buildings deepen its character.

The Chiesa degli Angeli Custodi was converted from a former oratory into a church in 1820. A mural can be seen on its façade, above which its bell tower rises. Both features give the building a distinctive appearance within the village.

The Mulino di Fanghetto was built in 1763 as a grain mill and olive press. Its original dual function points to the connection between processing and agriculture that remains visible in the history of the village.

Fanghetto referred to a piece of land where several local families, including the Trucchi family, settled from the 17th century onwards. This historical development forms part of the background to the name and adds to the perspective on the square, lanes and buildings.

The Surroundings Along the Roya

Monte Grammondo lies in the immediate surroundings of Fanghetto. The Area archeologica della città antica di Albintimilium is also located nearby. The points of interest thus extend from the mountain landscape to an archaeological site, without limiting Fanghetto to its historic centre.

The Roya runs through the municipality of Olivetta San Michele near the hamlet of Fanghetto. The river is therefore part of the landscape context in which the village and its surroundings can be viewed.

Hiking and Botanical Discoveries

The Airole–Fanghetto hiking trail is 3.849 kilometres long. It connects Airole with Fanghetto; from there, you can continue along the Sentier Vallée de la Roya to Libre and Breil. The route therefore connects Fanghetto with a sequence of trails that extends beyond the immediate surroundings of the village.

On the Sentier Valléen de la Roya, a botanical nature trail established by the municipalities of Airole and Olivetta San Michele extends to Fanghetto. Numerous signs explain the plant species found along the trail and their characteristics. Those interested in nature and the regional landscape are thus given a detailed introduction to the plant life along the route.
